Recommend me a wireless Pci-E network card, please.

I'm getting a little sick of the Ethernet cable running through my lounge connecting my pc to the router, so i'm on the hunt out for a decent wireless network card.

I've had a brief look over the internet, eBay, aria, overclockers, at a few different types, but am unsure which ones are regarded as the best brands, for reliability, connection etc. Plus i'm struggling to find any sites which have done recent reviews on any.

Does anyone have any experience with them and can point me in the right direction?

Ideally i'm looking for a 300mbs one as i play some online gaming, poker, vids etc, so looking for best wireless speeds possible.

I'm running a Belkin N type router if that makes any difference to anything.

Thanks in advance :)

I'll have a pint of what your having sir, wireless is not going to give you that.

Homeplugs, have a search for them. Please keep in mind that your router will probably only support 100Mb full duplex wired but worth checking incase its 1Gb

Maverick you might want to check your facts.... You can indeed get 300mb wireless.... Saying that it's pointless if you only have 8mb broadband...

To answer the question... And this is always down to personal choice... I like netgear products and intel based chipset products... There are many more as you point out but that's my opinion.... Although to get 300mb you will need to upgrade your router if it's not 300n already....

I use a pair of homeplugs from ebuyer and I'm pleased with them. Each one has a 100mb port inside it. I'd recommend the ones with a passthrough socket unless you've got more sockets in your home than you know what to do with; they much prefer to be plugged straight into the wall, not on an extension bar.

...or...

Put in a telephone socket extension, so that the router can sit beside the PC.

Sorry, was a little rushed with my reply as nipper had kicked off. Unless things have moved forward a whole heap since i last looked at N and you want to shove that sort of band width around you are better off cabled IMO.

The router is 300n so wanted to match it :)

I'll take a look at the netgear stuff, thanks

Asus N15's :)

I did look at them, they look pretty good actually but ive seen mixed reviews, but i guess they are only as good as the router sending the info :)

Get some homeplugs from ebuyer

Didn't consider these, i guess they are just a case of connecting the ethernet to them from the router then connecting an ethernet cable from the one by the pc into the pc itself?

As above really, another good idea which i hadn't considered. My router sits by my ps3 which is ethernet'd up so i guess if i put a telephone socket in by the pc i'd be faced with a similar issue of how to connect the ps3, think i'd prefer that cabled up as i don't want any extra lag when i'm dishing out lead butties :)

Marty, are the files you want to move around already on your home network?

I don't really have a home network as such Steve, i don't transfer files between stuff as such, more stream stuff off the net, i've just got the ps3 by the router, my pc which is another room, an itouch and my htc phone. I just wanted to remove the unsightly cable ive got running along the floor :)

The other option is to get a new piece of ethernet and run it under the floorboards nice and neatly i guess, i'm just a little too unmotivated to do that :) but if im going to notice a big difference from wired to wireless i'd be happy to keep my cable. i don't get great speeds anyway, 3mb down, 1mb up, so i wouldn't want to lose any bandwidth by going completely wireless.

Moving your phone socket would only work if you can put all your internet devices beside your router.

You're spot on about the homeplugs. Very simple to set up and use.

Bear in mind that you can have any old wireless adapter if your internet's only 3mb. Your connection will only be as fast as the slowest link.
