Al Massey
On saturday, did service and put in new rad from whiffbits Topped up the coolant all was running well At lunch left idling for 5 - 10 minutes whilst in garage finding a few tools and noticed steam from under bonnet switched off and opened the bonnet and its spraying from right at the back of the engine Coolant on floor not hot at all but engine was no coolant left in rad and rad quite cool apart from the hoses Any ideas where it was spraying out from engine is N/A cheers Not what i need after spending hundreds buying new things for the car : (

J_Supra_07
Sounds like a heater pipe at the back of the engine. Could of had an air block and bloow the pipe off. Did you bleed the new rad?

Dnk
Run the engine with the rad cap off, when it gets to normal temp the stat should be open, turn the heater to full hot and top up the rad up, air should bubble up out the rad, when the heater is nice and hot the system should be bled. Pop the rad cap on and fill the expansion tank with coolant to about halfway
Al Massey
Now see i did that, Air is coming out of the rad bit by bit but it doesnt seem to go down much and the engine was getting far too hot and not pumping it round as if air is in the system somewhere and blocking it
Dnk
Where was the temp gauge ? did the bottom rad hose get hot ? was the heater hot ?
Chris Wilson
Just keep topping it up, it will spit some back at you until it settles down. Show it who is boss The level may suddenly drop as the system opens the `stat. I read all this "bleeding" stuff, the MKIV self bleeds like a good `un
Al Massey
Right, tried again, and still doesnt seem right Its getting hot very quick, plenty of air has left but still has plenty in the system, the top pipe got very hot and saw steam within 10 mins and the pipe seems to be full of air and not coolant Am i being a comploete biff or does there seem to be something wrong? Scott
Sounds like a massive airlock. Turn everything off and try filling the system from the hose that connects into the heater matrix. That should get rid of most of the airlock and allow the system to flow round better. It's possible your thermostat, or worse your water pump, has given up the ghost. James
It is also easier for filling up if you park on an incline with the front of the car facing up

Al Massey
It takes a while for the bottom rad hose to get warm The top part of the rad is hot but the bottom where the pipe is is cold the temp gauge gets to halfway quickly, and sometimes goes over but then goes down How much of an incline is best? And how will i find out if the thermostat or pump has died?
J_Supra_07
Glad you found it mate, do as chris says an keep toping it up, it will spit out.

As for the incline go for as much as you handbrake will hold
