Idiots guide to connecting old HP Laser Jet to network please?

I have an old but well loved HP Laser Jet 4000N printer that's been connected with a parallel port cable for some years. It has a network port and I want to put in a cupboard out of the way and connect to it with a network cable, rather than the too short, and bulky, parallel cable. I have plugged it into my hub but the network fails to see it, and I can't find any instructions on how to resolve this. Can anyone give me a brief resume suitable for someone who is not very good with this sort of thing please?

Sounds like you need to install the drivers on the computers. (this is assuming when you mentioned network port you mean ethernet port which is plugged into your network switch). Link Geo provided has all the information to do this.

Play around with the menu on your printer to see if there are any settings (IP address etc)

If it is still plugged in to the network then the first thing to do is print off the 'information' page from the printer and then post up the IP address that it thinks it has (usually on the second page of info). That info page should be on the menus for the printer if it has a small LCD screen, and if not then try pressing the GO button of similar to see if it pops out then.

We can then talk you through getting your computers to see it on the network.

Struggling with this, thanks for the ideas, but not getting very far.... Have loaded the PCL8 drivers, and they load with no warnings or anything, but the printer won't do anything, and the network doesn't show it. I have made it print a test page, but there's no sign of an IP address listed. Have done a "Cold reset", no difference. Nothing on the little screen menus showing IP details, either.

I have found a link to a full users manual and it cites some extra menu items I didn't know existed or how to access them. It allows another 2 subsets of things that can be printed to a test page. It then gives the IP address as 192.168.0.3 on one of these test sheets, and entering that as the printer ID / location has woken it up :) It's printed a generic test page, and an e-mail from my e-mail app, so looking good now ;) I *THINK* I am sorted, so thanks very much indeed. I will put the IP address on the bottom of the printer for when I need it again :)
