gavin.starr
I would really appreciate it if some one could come and take a look at my supra to diagnose my engine rattle that has developed. I currently cant drive it as i dont want to make the problem worse. So unfortunatly you will have to come to me. It would be greatly appreciated as i would like to get to the bottom of the problem. The car is currently sat on my mothers drive feeling sorry for itself, I wont give out its exact location as i dont want a randomer seeing this post and trying to nick it, but is is being kept in a village called Freckleton, which is just outside of Preston Lancashire. Any help would be great, I need to know how much it is likely to cost to repair it, as this will be my deciding factor for if im going to keep it or not. Gutted:( Many thanks Gavin Edited October 7, 2011 by gavin.starr (see edit history)
Swampy442
Moar info. When does it rattle, hot/cold/revs dependant. Its probably something simple so dont panic just yet. Id take a look but Im miles away sadly

gavin.starr
[video=youtube;qR8-srJ1yw4] This was the video i took, i didnt want to rev it to hard but it basically comes in around 2-3k but gets louder the hotter the engine gets, it seems to be quite quiet when its cold. gavin.starr
I know it making me feel ill at how much it is likeley to cost me if i were to repair it, and how much i would loose on a sale if i decide to sell it. Very sad times.
Dnk
Sounds top end to me so could be cam related. Has it had regular oil changes with quality oil ? also what kind of miles is it supposed to have done ?
gavin.starr
It has done relitivley high miles, around 120k, and yes i have done all the oil changes myself with silkolene pro s oil at regular intervals.
Dnk
120k isnt high on a well looked after 2jzgte engine
gavin.starr
Do you have any ideas on what it could be then?
Scooter
I'm no expert, but I would remove the fan belt and then start her briefly and do the same rev test...........if the noise is the same then this will eliminate the ancillaries driven by the belt and leave you with a possible cam belt tensioner wheel issue or engine innards somewhere
Guest kenblockseal
Sounds like big ends to me, Jack the front wheels off the ground then see where the noise comes from.
justice
sounds like the big end too me aswell. I got shown this on another supra while at the garage and, Paul called it the 'death rattle'....
Jurgen-Jm-Imports
it sounds like your buckets are worn making a valve clatter ( you might get away with just shimming it) your head needs refurbed to be fair.
Jurgen-Jm-Imports
That doesnt sound good similar noise to your old head when the buckets were worn, ok when cold and not so when warm.. btw feel free to call me over weekend for next lot of work
dude
Sounds like big ends to me, Jack the front wheels off the ground then see where the noise comes from. Spot on Nothing like top end, its a big end bearing, sounding like that the crank is more than likely junk as is the con rod and oil pump. add heywood
similar noise to your old head when the buckets were worn, ok when cold and not so when warm.. btw feel free to call me over weekend for next lot of work Will do tomorrow Jurgen IMO doesnt sound like my upper engine problem I had, as mine was constant throughout the rev range, where as this is confined to a certian rev range. Sounds exactly like when my old rs turbo engine spun a bearing...
supralu
Sounds exactly like mine did last month. It was the big ends. I just got a replacement engine fitted from Keron. Good luck getting it sorted mate.

gavin.starr
How much we looking for a replacement complete block, without ancillaries just a working block? I kind of feared every one was going to say this. If it is too much to repair im afraid im going to have to sell it and take a loss:(
