Fuel pump/electrical issues.

Nope no holes drilled. Since the car last ran properly all I've done is put in the 2 rear speakers. 2 rear bits of plastic that go over them and the plastic window trim for the rear quater windows. All put in with the proper screws in the proper holes.

Huge thanks to Shane who popped over today.

 

I forget exactly what he tested in what order (im sure he will let anyone know if i get it wrong)

 

But the fuel pump still worked when we tested it.

the fuel ecu wasnt faulty.

 

So we put in a new fuse and it just popped again. However there was a big spark from the earth of the battery where it connects to the chasis. It was loose and even after a few seconds the connector was hot. So. Tightened the bolt properly but it still wasnt right. I dont remember what was wrong at this point but the pump still wasnt getting any power.

 

Shane had a similar issue with his earth a while ago and it blew up his stock ecu... so we removed the AEM and the short had dissapeared. Worrying.

So im stood there thinking... hum time for a syvecs then...

 

Then we were poking arround the engine bay and shane noticed a connector rubbing up against the fan/aux belt. infact it used to be a connector (for a vsv i think) but it had been smashed to pieces. put that out of the way and made sure it wasnt touching anything.

 

(Thinking of it now when the car broke down i did near an odd flapping noise just before i stopped (the reason for stopping) which i assumed was plastic wheel well trim. but it could well have been this)

 

Connected the AEM back up, made a make shift fuse from some crappy cat5 cable as i had run out and i got fuel pressure and after a bit of throttle stabbing it started (think there was a lot of fuel in there as we had the pump running a little earlier) and after a little while it ran well...

 

So it looks like it was that connector, and i thankfully dont need a new ecu :)

 

Did notice the aux belt has a slit in it and is frayed a little too. Its brand new and has only been on a few weeks. Which could have been caused by the connector.

 

Will pop to halfords later and get a propper fuse. Then ive got a few bolts to tighten up and screws to put back in and ill take it for a test drive.

 

Shane noticed an odd rubbing noise when reving the car a little. but to me it just sounded like the usual turbo flutter noises you get when the turbo spools and you let off when you only have a little pressure. i get it on my uk at like 0.2 bar. but on further investigation it seemed to be coming from the ban/aux belt area. could just be the little bit of frayed belt catching on something. but ive also realised my bov is down on the IC pipe near there. So could be worries for nothing :p

Sounds good - short causes battery volts to drop , increased current draw to pumps on start = fuse blows

however the relay has now been subjected to high current draw across it's contacts and could have pitted contacts so it's prudent to replace it - it's always the wrong time these things fail !!

You are very welcome mate. The vsv connector casing had disintegrated leaving the springfinger contacts from the connector touching each other while being rubbed by the aux belt. Yes there was a moment when I thought that maybe the AEM had fried, but luckily no. With hindsight, that noise I heard could well have been your bov. And before anyone shouts, I checked the current being drawn with the meter to satisfy myself the short had been cleared before making a temporary fuse from a single strand of cat5. Very nice car you have there Adam.

Just popped a proper fuse in and finished off the bits and bobs and it's running fine now. Still getting the odd issue at 5500+ rpm. Not sure if it's the bov or the wastegate. Could well be me accidentally changing a boost controller setting. But I don't know how to set it or what it should be set to. Ryan did it originally I guess so will have to check with him
