JS2004
Hey chaps Im at work hence my posting / searching methods are limited by the silly restrictions they put on the interwebs =( I am hoping its not a serious issue, but probably is given my week so far! On the way to work this morning - stuck in traffic, so crawling along. Noticed the CD skipping, then the radio lost power, almost as if battery his dying. I turned it off and noticed that as the car was running it sounded almost like it was misfiring (but i dont think it is) and the lights on the odo / dash began to pulse in tune with the engine - almost like its struggling to stay on. I hit the indicator and pulled out of the line of traffic to park up. Each time I was pressing on the brake the lights on the dash etc would dim and also the indicators are causing the dash to dim in sync with the lighting of the indicators. Does this sound like an alternator problem? It has only just started and I have not noticed it the last few times I have been out in her. Granted the trips havnt been long (10 miles or so). I use it regularly enough so its not stood for more than 2 or 3 days without being used. *IF* it is the alternator is it a tricky thing to fix? Im not too mechanically minded or skilled but I have so far managed to refurbish the starter motor contacts and change over the heater matrix (even though it did take me a week in total - mainly due to waiting for the aircon to get degassed). Help anyone? Cheers
JS2004
Car is a 94 J spec - works pants internet doesnt seem to let me edit a post for some reason Checked when I got home. Battery is about 12.47v when not switched on. With engine on this goes up to 14v. That means the alternator is working as far as I can gather, which is a good thing.. just now confused as to why it started to die. Gonna check the battery later to see if its holding the charge or not. Edited October 4, 2011 by JS2004 (see edit history)
TT Paul
start the car see what voltage it drops to and if voltage goes back up quick, if car is sluggish to start then poss battery.. are water levels ok in batt if below plates then won't hold charge very well, could do a check on cells with water tester. only takes one cell to die to kill battery also check connections on alternator and are eartns ok
