Paul R
Hi, Any web developers on here? Have you used Mambo or Joomla as a basis for a website? I'm looking at options at the moment and want something to save me time with regards to user logons and admin back end etc. Or do you think a framework would be better? I'm not experienced in Java frameworks, but I'm ok with PHP. Paul.

Paul R
Are you a developer? got any examples of pages you've written with Joomla? I'm looking at the symphony framework too...
Thorin
Mambo ceased development and became Joomla essentially. I used it a few years ago and at the time preferred Drupal. Wordpress is much better these days too.
Paul R
I just had a look at drupal. Looks like it has everything. no need for coding! Interesting. I wonder how much it actually cuts dev time down by? If I wrote my site from scratch then everything would be exactly as I want it - Maybe drupal is that good that I'll install it, install some plugins, change the layout and it will just work? johnny g
If you want a blog-style site, then Wordpress is great. Go to Joomla and use the demos - it's pretty easy to use.
Paul R
what I'm getting at, is will it be as flexible as me developing my own site from scratch?
Thorin
what I'm getting at, is will it be as flexible as me developing my own site from scratch? Of course not, writing everything completely from scratch would be much more flexible... it would also be much more work and much more hassle. Paul R
Ok, well, I'm after a quick win here really. I think I'll have a play with Drupal. Do you know if it has a plugin for user levels? So I can have a group for 'selling a service' and a group for 'buying a service'? allowing me to display different parts of the site to different users? Or is that the kind of thing that I'll have to write myself? Paul.
Thorin
I believe so... but it's been a few years since I used it.

johnny g
I'll have a play tonight and report back, if anyone is interested Joomla does by default, and extensions can be used to enhance this. I've used it on a few sites to good effect.
Paul R
Hi Well I decided that drupal was the solution for me! I've been going lots of research and reading and I've worked out how to do everything needed for my websites. Drupal is fantastic to work with. Using the views and rules modules, you can do almost anything, the rest you can code yourself. I've done quite a bit of CSS now too so I can get the styling correct. I van say that drupal is certainly as flexible as starting from scratch and its going to save me a huge amount of time. Now the research is done, its time to design and build!
