Attero
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-15116064 Money raising scheme? Or is the government genuinely listening to the public? It's been said time and time before about having an 80mph limit on the motorways, but it looks like they are actually looking into it now. If this is so, drivers are able to get away with speeds of up to 90mph.
dr_jekyll
im never under 90 leptons on 3 leptons on motorways anyway.

merckx
I felt that it almost became acceptable to maybe go upto 82-83mph or there abouts with the 70mph limit. The Police will enforce this new 80mph limit much stricter in my opinion.

Never had any problems doing it. But I guess I picked the lucky straw. But it's so annoying. When you see police on the motorway, everyone grinds to a halt. Gaz6002
Stupid idea. People in this country can't drive at 70mph properly. Also, if the limit goes to 80mph don't imagine the coppers will be as lax as they are now. In fact, this could even pave the way for SPECS on all motorways. It's been on the cards for a while now. I'm *extremely* worried about the hidden implications.
Gaz6002
If this is so, drivers are able to get away with speeds of up to 90mph. I wouldn't be so sure about that. Most coppers will let you off for that now, but if limits go up, I'd wager tolerance goes down.
j_jza80
Hopefully it'll frighten a few dimwits out of the middle lane As Gaz has said though, I'm bothered about this, for a few reasons: - are our roads suitable for such speeds, generally? - sales reps / White van men - will people generally be aware of the increase in stopping distance? - driving standards in poor weather are generally dire here, will this make it worse? Gaz6002
Two months too late, bunch of, well, you know! It's not even been looked at yet, let alone decided. If it is, it won't come into effect until 2013 in the uk last week i was pulled up by the police and when asked why the pulled me over they said we wondered why you were driving slow i said i am doing 48 in a 50mph zone and they said that they thought i was up to no good as i was sticking to the speed limit You must look dodgy
Digsy
Isn't one of the reasons they want to do this "to get the economy moving"? In that case I think we need it now and not after two years of (adopts weedy pose and annoying whiney voice) public consultation. FFS just run an ad campaign saying that the national speed limit sign now means 80 on a motorway and get it done!
letmeshowyou
Seems a good idea to me, but why settle at 80 IMO. Slightly higher still makes more sense. I wonder what the green campaigners will have to say about reduced fuel economy!
Purity14
I wonder what the green campaigners will have to say about reduced fuel economy! They will be too concerned about something else just as insignificant.
Dnk
The economy is going to need a bit more than a 10 mph rise on our motorways to get it going. Will they raise the limit for hgv's ? It'll need a lifeboat first to save it from sinking
Tyson
They should rip down all the speed cameras and weigh them in for scrap, the money for scrap combined with the saving in running costs will be a good start. Just my opinion.
ellis
My mum always used to say to me, "I don't know why you drive so fast, you don't get there any quicker". Try telling that to Lewis Hamilton mother!!

Thorin
The ABD have been campaigning for this for years http://www.abd.org.uk/motorwayspeedlimit.htm I'll believe it when I see it, they'll more than likely end up reducing it to 60MPH, and sticking SPECS camera's everywhere.
