Jellybean
The new 911 and Corvette are getting 7 Speed Manual Gearbox's; I think this is ridicolous, 6 max!
Josh
What about the 8 speed automatic in BMWs? You're right, 6 is enough!
Jellybean
What about the 8 speed automatic in BMWs? You're right, 6 is enough! If its an Auto, it does not bother me if it is a 20 speed box but 7 speed manual is just getting ridicolous; you will need a HGV license to drive it
Ewen
Why all the gears ? I've no ideas.
Gaz6002
On the 911 the seventh gear is for MPG... top speed is only possible in sixth and you can only shift to seventh if you've used fifth or sixth first. It's one of many reasons the new 911 is pretty damn spectacular when you start crunching the numbers. Its CO2 emissions are stupidly low for what it is. Although it looks similar (I think better than any so far) the changes are very significant. Why all the gears ? I've no ideas.
AJI
6 gears for acceleration and a 7th for motorway cruise to bring the revs under 2500 at 80mph. (at a guess) I can see the logic behind it.
Thorin
Why just 7? Why can't I have 9.5 gears?
AJI
Why just 7? Why can't I have 9.5 gears? I'm sure if you have the dosh somebody will happily fit that for you sir.
bodilx6
Would be so nice to have a proper motorway gear. Just cruised through Germany in a BMW 535 and at 110mph it runs roughly 3000 rpm. Thats good cruising

imi
doesn't sound all that impressive according to this link the new 911 gt2 rs does 20mpg with 620bhp - is that supposed to be impressive? http://www.evo.co.uk/news/evonews/272587/991generation_porsche_911_revealed.html Seems like the new 911 is more efficient at a whopping 35mpg - whoopie, certainly intrigued to see what the numbers of the true performance models actually are. Tee from China
I always managed well with just 3 in my old 1958 Ford Prefect even the lack of synchromesh on first wasn't a problem and with reverse opposite first maneuvering was never a problem either! :-)
