SupraStar 3000
Its my g/fs birthday at the weekend and she's having a trial helicopter lesson then some shooting. Bit of a strange combination i grant you, but hey ho, at least its original. Question is, having never fired a shotgun before, do they have much recoil? Reason i ask is, she has a small shoulder injury that i would want to aggravate. thanks.
supra matt
if its a 12 bore twin barrel then yes it has a little kick in it and if she is small and has a shoulder injury then just make sure she holds it tight into her shoulder and don't lean into in to much , but she will no after two shots how it feels ,
SupraStar 3000
excellent advice. thanks matt. She has fired rifles before, but i think 12 bores kick quite a punch so I'll make sure she holds it correctly.
Ewen
Which shoulder has she injured, is she right or left handed, and is she right or left eye dominant ?
supra matt
im sure if its a organised event they will show her how to hold it propyl , the only other thing is the weight might affect her shoulder injury depending on what she has ? tooquicktostop
A gas auto has less kick than a side by side, if you shoot correctly you should be fine, it will still put stress on a weak shoulder however You can get stock protectors to minimise the kick, worth calling the club before you go
Chris Wilson
Most shoots will have a 20 gauge or a .410 for the ladies. There are some good tutorials on YouTube. We were at a clay shoot the other week and the wife beat me.... She's staying at home next time Clay cartridges are usually fairly low power, so eve a 12 gauge won't kick very much. A helicopter's a big target, she should be able to hit that if the clays are elusive

Ewen
Which shoulder has she injured, is she right or left handed, and is she right or left eye dominant ? Why do you ask about eye dominance Ewen ? If shes right handed, but left eye dominant, she can shoot off her left shoulder. Unless its her left shoulder shes hurt, and shes left eye dominant. Hence why I asked.

Ewen
Ok, so how do I know which of her eyes is dominant ? Get her to stand ten feet away from you but facing you. If shes right handed, ask her to make a circle with her right thumb and index finger, then keeping her right arm extended and both eyes open, raise her arm and look at your nose through the 'circle'. If you can see her right eye through the 'circle', shes right eye dominant...if you can see her left eye, shes left eye dominant. If shes left handed, get her to do the same but with her left hand. SupraStar 3000
Thanks Ewen. I understand about the eye thing, but still confused what her being a dominatrix has to do with pigeons. Very help info people. thanks everyone.

Shes a dominatrix ? She should know all about butt kicking, box locks, tight chokes and pulling your trigger then....
bigbloodyturbo
Just give her a 12bore, the heavier the gun the less felt recoil there is. If she's of a small frame it might be better to put her on a 20 bore or move down to 20gram loads on the 12bore. Just make sure she does not have the gun slack on her shoulder. If neccesary put a comb raiser on the stock, most woman have long thin necks causing them to lean their face over the stock trying to get their face down far enough to see the rib/bead properly resulting in them tending to lift their face of the stock early missing the target and getting a good smack in the cheek. Hold it tight and unlike what someone on here just said, do lean in to it, if you dont she'll loose balance as soon as she fires and end up stepping backwards and getting more felt recoil. bigbloodyturbo
You can't beat a bit of black powder, lots of smoke and a proper big BANG Years ago when people used to hand load, we used to slip the odd black powder cartridge into peoples pocket while shooting skeet, proper brown trouser moment and a lot of laughter when he unexpectedly filled the layout with black smoke lol! stevie_b
I've done clay pigeon shooting 2 or 3 times. The last time I did it (a year ago) they gave us silenced guns with subsonic cartridges. I've never had any shoulder soreness, even the first time which was a good 10 years ago (less silencing, possibly faster cartridges), although i can understand your concern if she's got an injury. I always lean forwards a bit into the gun. It's good fun. She's lucky to have you as a boyfriend.
