E36 M3 Evo...Opinions please...

I've recently bought a '06 Vectra SRi 150 CDTi Estate (to sell and make a few quid on...) and have been offered a 1997 E36 BMW M3 3.2 Evolution 4dr saloon as part ex plus £300 my way. The guy rarely uses it and has it serviced twice a year. I've paid £1500 for the Vectra, it owes me £1533.75p including buying it, the private sale value is £3500 so was going to advertise it at £3250ono and hope for £3000.

1, has anybody owned one, if so, how would you rate it?

2, with 72k on it in pretty good nick with tax and test, how much would it be worth?

and

3, with the present climate, is it likely to sell?

Oh and 4, how in the name of God do I convince the wife it's a good idea!?

id stick with the vectra buddy will be much easier to sell saying that the last m3 to finish on ebay was £2525.00 and the last 06 vectra sri 150 tdi estate with reasonable mileage finished at £3500 so ask him for 900 on top and you shouldnt be far wrong but it will take a lil longer to sell.

ahhh the joys of autotrader lol i remember first looking on there to value a supra came in around 4k then you look on ebay and the same cars finishing for 2! dont get me wrong id sooner buy from autotrader or pistonheads as i feel you get a better class of cars from those sites but i wouldnt put much faith in peoples valuations

i had an m3 evo and they are so much fun and and i wouldn't listen to l33wgn because the m3 evo hold there value and 72k on the clock is not much in one of these

sorry bullet by no means was i putting down the m3 i agree its a brilliant drivers car but to sell i think he will have more luck with the vectra as for the prices i gave just look at completed listings on flebay. from my experience it took me over a month to sell my z4 2.5 and 3 hours to shift a ford fiesta !

I agree the bm may not sell as quick as say a fiesta as for it taking you a mouth to sell a z4 that doesn't surprise me as bmw even struggled to sell that model

Depending on how much you want for the M3 i could be intrested, i have a contact in norway who buys them from me and i source him a few a month, He does pay more for Coupe's as they have the vadar seats where as the saloon doesnt.

Well I want £3250 for the Vectra, if he'd pay that then I could put you directly in touch with the guy who owns it, he can sell his car, give me cash for the vectra, I can have a tidy little holiday, everyone's a winner!

He only really wants rid because he keeps having to jump start it when he hasn't used it for 6 weeks at a time. It is a lovely car though, just think the wife may castrate me, already having a Supra and coming home with another toy!

Why doesn't he just get a trickle charger they cost peanuts to run  And if distance to a socket is a problem there are solar powered ones available. His excuse for selling sounds a little suspect to me. Make sure you check the VANOS unit as these are uneconomical to repair of replace as they are ludicrously expensive.

Im not sure if the M3 had the same problem but around that time BMW had big problems with engines.

I looked at a 328 convertable of the same year and took a mate who's a top technician at my local

BMW dealership, he said dont touch it as the motors on its last legs due to the nicosealed bores failing.

BMW changed quite a few engines apparently so its worth checking that out just to be on the safe side

I believe the problems were with the nikasil engines fitted to the 325i and the 328i. The M3 uses a M derived engine which was completely different from the other engines of the range. The problem with the M3's is the Variable valve unit aka the VANOS unit which tends to fail and is quite expensive.
