Advice/Input - Power steering cooler & Oil cooler.

Recommended Posts

I'm in the middle of sorting out my power steering and oil coolers. I've mounted them temporarily and I just want to ask if anyone can see any issues with my choices before I settle with them. Never having done anything like this I'm kind of winging it, unfortunately this means it's possible there could be some things I've overlooked.

Look good to me. Hodge put mine in almost the same place and I'm not having any issues. Although my cooler on the right is angled more to maximise air intake.

Yeah I'm going to have a play at that end. I think I have a bit of space to move it around, the intercooler pipe is a pain. I'm not really going to know for certain until I'm ready to mount the IC back in unfortunately.

I've tried and tried and there is no way that the oil cooler is going to fit safely in under the passenger headlight. Must be because I have the doluck front, hence why I'm finding it a lot more difficult than others. Also the fusebox won't be helping matters lol.

On the plus side, there is LOADS of space underneath the bumper bar. I take it having the oil cooler in front of the intercooler rather than between it and the radiator will be fine?

I can easily fit the PS cooler where I have the oil cooler above.

Back to looking at this again. I had another go at it and I can JUST about fit it in as per the above picture. The only issue is that due to the size of the oil lines I will need to mount the cooler the opposite way round from what is in the pic above, with the feeds coming in from the bottom.

Is there any reason this would cause any issues? I can't see it being a problem but I just want to make sure in case there is something I haven't thought of.

Try and put a support strut / bracket to the top of the cooler, even if it's just to one corner. They don't like vibration or movement and you certainly don't want one cracking. Supporting the top as well as bolting down the bottom really helps. It's quite small, a bit too small if you do track days, but fine for road usage and running up a drag strip. You need at least -10 hoses and fittings everywhere, ideally -12. A 3 litre turbo or twin turbo moves a lot of oil around the system, bigger pipes equal less pressure drop.

Hmm, mounting upside down is not a very good idea, they ten d to exacerbate gravity draining into the engine oil ways. You will certainly need to be sure to run an oil filter with an anti drain back valve, or you could run flap type anti drain back valves in the lines (be SURE SURE SURE to put them the right way round.......!!!!) but good ones are very expensive. If you could have the unions on the top it ensures one less potential problem.

HTH.
