trinitom
Got an a4 (b8) a few months ago, and since i have it the airbag light it's always on and the buttons on the steering wheel don't work. I did search for this problem over the net, and it seems the problem could be from the clockspring behind the wheel. any experts around before i take the car to a dealer? Benjy
clock spring sounds like a good bet. have you had it plugged in at all?
Chris Wilson
If you were nearer I have the latest Bosch KTS which would show the cause straight away. Some local VW / Audi / Skoda enthusiast may have a cut down VAGCOM you could try.

Chris how do you find the kts machine as i'm thinking of buying one (pc based) i have been on all the bosch diagnostic courses but every time we used the tablet based machine we had problems. PS sorry for the hijack
Chris Wilson
It's great, but I have a friend who works for Bosch, so it hasn't cost me as much as some might pay.... The updates are the killer. Mine is PC based. I am a big fan of Bosch diagnostics.
absz
Thats great, i'm not too fussed about the cost as the company is paying for it:d

I would like to know more possible causes before i start removing stuff! If you were nearer I have the latest Bosch KTS which would show the cause straight away. I went to a friend mine that works for vw/skoda but they don't have the vagcom for B8 models, only B7. don't know about the Bosch unit, but in Audi forums.com they do talk alot about the Ross-tech Vagcom. http://www.ross-tech.com
Benjy
Anybody with even Snap~On or Sykes Pickavant diagnostic software should be able to diagnose the fault, if there's no communication between the wheel and the clockspring, there will be a diagnostic trouble code. The light on the dashboard alone will have stored a DTC.
trinitom
Is there any way of knowing the stored DTC, like we do in the supra! (with a Clip) that's what my friend told me, he tried to erase the warning light but for some reason the Vagcom was limited to a few optoins. Benjy
In order to turn the light off he would have had to read the DTC. If you can get the DTC and let me know, I can look it up on Autodata and give you possible causes. But no, Audi don't use blink codes, it needs to be plugged in buddy. I think i'll live it to the pro's, i may only remove the steering wheel to see if there's something lose inside. But thanks anyway for the help. thanks peps. Chris Wilson
IMHO modern Audis are trouble, I don't think I have come across one with a couple of years or more on it that hasn't got SOME sort of electric issue Some are a nightmare to fix. Benjy
They are a pain in the groin Chris. Fantastic until they break. Usually ABS, Airbags or general CAN system faults I've found. P.S. I've not forgotten you Chris, just waitng for a cheque to clear.

absz
The radio controls from the steering wheel are CANBUS the only thing in common with the airbag unit is the clock spring the multi-plug which connects under the steering wheel and the main ignition feed, so check ALL fuses thats all you can do. also has it the orignal steering wheel fitted or has someone upgraded to say a S-line
Havard
Until recently we had two A4 (B8's). Neither gave us any trouble. Mine is now 18 months old and has never missed a beat in 30K miles? H.
Benjy
They're generally built only to break after the warranty period has run out. Lol

All the fuses have been looked, and they are all good.
L18msy
My money is on the clockspring. It is either the plugs that aren't connected (there should be two iirc) or the clockspring has been fitted and not been centred. If off centre it will snap inside when turned to full lock thus breaking the circuit.
