Ricky49
My Playstation has decided that it doesn't want to work. I have spent most of the evening stripping it down and slowly tested my way through the circuit board. I have found the problem it's the diode that makes the laser read the disk has called it a day. After speaking with Sony they want £80 for a new PCB. No thanks I will get another PS3 of eBay.
Marty
Mine died a week ago, red light of death, wouldn't turn on for any longer than a second or two, i had to completely strip mine down, re flow it (using a heat gun and some flux), then piece it back together and voila, its like a brand new one again, all for a £5er My mates also gave up, similar to what yours has done by the sounds of it, i had to replace the laser for him. Cost £35 for the laser but has worked fine ever since. Whats yours doing, or not doing? £80 quid sounds like a rip off for something probably worth a few quid, may be worth looking on eBay for the part. Ricky49
When you put the disc in it doesn't show on the screen or make the loading sound. The symbol in the top right corner just spins road.
caseys
Next time don't take it apart and take it back, it's covered for 6 years from purchase.
Scott
Just get a laser module from ebay. As said they are around £35 including P&P now. I have 4 PS3s now BTW you can get the whole deck for around £50. Whatever option you choose just make sure you get the right one. When you have them apart there are obvious differences (twin lasers etc).

I didn't know they covered you for 6years though? I was under the impression it was 2.

EU sale of Goods Act covers you for 6 years for any electrical equipment - goods sold in the EU have to be seen to last 6 years so even wear is covered. I got my PS3 60Gb which I bought on launch replaced the other year under the act - you've got to keep your receipt and take it back to the retailer - as it's their responsibility. You're right manufacturer's warranty is 1-2 years. Basically all extended warranties are a crock - the only thing they're worth having for is if you're careless and you need cover for accidental damage or loss. Anything requiring a plug is covered by this act - TVs, washing machines, microwaves, curling tongs etc.

Unofficially the EU covers you under the Electronic Consumer Rights legislation..... or something like that. As long as you phone them up armed with that information and ready to argue your case, as Simon was, you will win Edit: As Si says
