Guest stevie.84
Hi, i dont know much about engines at all but my radiator went previously and i had that replaced with a brand new radiator, i noticed today that the car started getting hot (pretty much on the red) when i was waiting in heavy traffic - as soon as the traffic opened up and i gained speed the engine cools right down to half way as it normally is, and it keeps doing this when i have to wait in traffic - ive checked the coolant level and it is fine and have put paper under the car and there is no leaks that i know of, the heating works fine in my car as i turned it up to try cool the engine,so as ive read on here i think the thermostat should be ok, any help would be much appreciated thanks. adam1983
Have you checked the viscous fan mate? The coupling on mine went quite a while ago and was causing it to overheat a bit when stationary. It cooled down more when moving probably because there was more air flow whilst moving and cooling it down that way. Worth checking mate
Guest stevie.84
yeah i will check that thanks, is it a case of the coupler sticking or something? im sorry but i dont exactly know what to check on the fan, sorry for my lack of knowledge. Guest stevie.84
just to add aswell when it was hot i opened up bonnet and a little fluid was coming out of the overflow section near front bumper.
adam1983
I think it could be due to it just becoming worn mate. If it stops working properly then the fan will just spin at a constant rate and not speed up when it should to provide better cooling. I noticed it by raising the revs from under the bonnet and watching if the fan speeds up. If you rev the car at a high enough rpm for a few seconds you should see the fan move noticeably faster. If not get it checked out as that could be a cause of your overheating
Guest stevie.84
yeah from what you describe im hoping thats the problem, i will check that first thing tomorrow as its too dark now and neighbours in the cul-de-sac wont be pleased if i start revving the engine at this time lol, but thanks for your help i appreicate it. dude
Sounds like you need to bleed the system properly to me dude, get the front in the air and try and get a 'head' of water by say putting a lemonade bottle or funnel in the top of the rad and running the car as you fill it. Scooter
just to add aswell when it was hot i opened up bonnet and a little fluid was coming out of the overflow section near front bumper. which would suggest your expansion tank was full, was it? Did you get/use a new rad cap with the new rad?
absz
replace rad cap,Also has it got the right 50/50 mix of coolant or was it topped up with just water?
Guest stevie.84
Yeah reference the rad I ordered it offline and assumed it came with a new cap but now that you mention it I think the cap will be old as it doesn't look as new as the rad, since I posted this the car hasn't overheated but I think I will change the rad cap to be sure and a bleed is in order aswell, thanks for your help guys. nigelboyne
sounds like a thermostat not opening could be a rad switch to, either way get this sorted asap or you will blow head gasket
Swampy442
Was the a/c on?
Guest stevie.84
Nah a/c wasn't on bud, I'm going to bleed it and change rad cap, but touch wood at the moment it's not overheating.
Guigsy
Same happened to mine. The fluidine Rad was split along the top and couldn't see the leak
