Some advice about SKY BB...

Right, things are getting a bit bad for me now so I hope somebody could give some advise... basically I called up SKY when I moved into my new built property I was told that I should be getting around 8MB BB speed after they did a line test. Based on this I agreed to go forward with the 12 month contract. 2 months down the line I am getting around 4MB speed maximum. This is almost half of what was promised! I tried to call Tech support but was asked to do things like restart modem, restart it again, try another phone point, try Master socket(which I already am) and finally even told to change my BT faceplate! I was told if all this doesn't work then I have to call BT to schedule a line test etc... (basically saying its not their fault although I suspect they are limiting my speed on their end...)

4MB might sound like a lot but if run a single download I can't even watch BBC iplayer in HD which I think is really bad considering I live only 0.5 miles from nearest exchange... (As the crow flies)

Can anyone give some pointers as to what I should do? I was told to get to Tier 3 tech support but I have no idea how I do that. To be honest finding the Sky BB tech support number was a challenge in itself! If Sky BB told me at start that I would only be getting 4MB I would seriously reconsider other options and not get locked into a 12 month contract...

You will never get what they say you should.

The MB they say is if only you are on the line and nobody else. If you go on the net a 3am you should see an increase in MB than you do at 7pm as there will be more people on the line using the net.

It's not my choosen profession, but I work with people that do this day in day out and I have picked up bits and also that's what they have told me also.

BT will say the line is fine with no errors. garenteed. they always do when you know it must be the line at fault. i work for an it company and we have had faults before where we have done everything people could think of to resolve the issue even then we had to argue with bt till we were blue in the face it was a fault at there end. then it still took them fecking ages to fix it.

i called bt the other day (ive actualy canceled and switched to virgin, however they cant find the cable in the street! so i called to un cancel my line as its going to take a while longer) I get put through to india and they guy says i can see the cancel order but it was made by virgin so only they can cancel it. so i call virgin... they tell me its my line i have to do it and appologise. i call bt back.. through to india again. this time i get told there is no cancel order. also get told my line is active and working perfectly. after telling the guy that his colegue just told me there WAS an order he just kept telling me my line was working and was fine after his tests...

i was calling from my land line. i know the sodding thing is working, im useing it.

I only get 2.5 meg on my "up to 8 meg" service. its not skys fault realy, other than iffy advertising and telling everyone by default you can get 8meg. its bt and there crappy infrastructure.

you can easily change to another provider and still get the same speed or very similar.

unfortunately the distance from the exchange isnt as the crow flys. you have to be very close to the exchange to get a decent speed. i live in nn4 which is on the outskirts of northampton. i used to live in nn1 (less than a mile from the town centre) and still didnt get above 4meg.
