Ok update on this. Got a new 0.9 rad cap today and tried it out.

Turns out it hasn't solved anything as the top rad hose is still going really hard even when it is only getting up to normal temp with no driving.

This is really annoying now as I still seem no closer to solving this and also own 6 rad caps of various ratings because of this.

Any other ideas of what to try or look at.

Any suggestions no matter how small just in case I may have missed anything. Willing to try pretty much anything now to get this sorted.

If it was really building up an excess of coolant pressure it would just vent a load of water into the overflow bottle. Is it doing that? The top hose will get quite firm with say 10 PSI in it. Are you sure there actually IS a problem?

I did not think that the top hose would get so hard though?

I'm not sure if it is actually putting any coolant back in the expansion tank. I took the overflow pipe off the connection to the rad cap whilst the top hose was really hard to see if there was any flow. I left it off for a few minutes and no coolant spilled out during that time.

Not sure if it would or not so put it back.

Any thoughts?

Just out of interest how long does it takes for you guys to get the engine up to normal temp from cold start?

Only reason I ask is because I just noticed mine gets there in about 3 minutes which seems quick. Could this be pointing to something related with my problem?

Also just noticed that the a/c button doesn't do anything anymore either which is strange as it has done in the past.

It lights up as normal but doesnt raise the revs like it should do. Don't think this would have anything to do with this though but thought I would add it in just in case

Ok I ran it up today with cap off and heaters on full with hot air.

I did that for about 10-15 mins to be sure there was no air in the system. I put the cap back on and left it for a few minutes. The top hose was hot but not really hard like it was before.

I gave it a few revs to see if things would change and then the top hose went really hard again and stayed like that.

I then checked the bottom of the radiator and the bottom hose and they were both cold. I'm assuming this is normal and how they are meant to be?

If this all seems normal then I will leave it for now and wait till next year when it's back on road.

After about 5 to 10 minutes the thermostat should open fully and hot water flow into the rad through the top hose and cooled, but still very warm water flow into the water pump from the bottom rad hose. if the bottom hose stays stone cold either the thermostat is not opening properly, or the water pump is knackered. It would seem that there may be an issue. I'd get someone in the know to look at it.

I know Adam, you watched me and verified everything :D I was just saying the thermostat was brand new. Cant be driven Chris as its SORN'd

Yeah I know mate. It just doesn't seem right that's all mate and was hoping that I could get it sorted before I go away in November.

It's not going to be used until when I get back at the end of march anyways so I suppose I will have to wait until then.
