Recommended Posts

I've search google and im just getting ten year olds answering on Yahoo answers. Mine eats Crickets, Locusts, mealworms and salad (Sometimes) Can i cut the crickets out as they keep escaping and its a giant tank so they hide everywhere?

Also, After having her for 1 1/2 months she still doesnt like me, Is this personal and we are never going to get on? Despite saying her name everytime i hand feed her or get her out shes still a little b1+ch

Have you ever seen an animal look so peed off?

I never give mine crickets. He eats mainly salad (Morrissons herb salad is his favourite) and has meal worms and strawberries as a treat. (I don't want to enter into a lizard feeding debate - this was his diet when I took him on). I adopted him after his original owner couldn't keep him any more. Stumpy (he only has 3 legs and half a tail) is extremely docile and loves coming out for cuddles.

I have kept various lizards and only ever seen one that wasn't friendly - an iguana that a friend rescued that had been mistreated. The iggy was extremely timid and terrified of men. I adopted him and managed to get him tame with a lot of patience and a few nips along the way!! He went to live with another friend as at the time I had a 6 foot iggy who wasn't keen on another iggy in her space.

I think your lizard just needs time and patience. However she may simply not enjoy human company...

Brilliant, After all the ones i have seen in pet shops running up to the glass going "Pick me! Pick me!" I get the one thats constantly on her period. im bitter

typical woman!!

she looks frightened in the first photo - let her get used to how you smell... and remember if your just washed your hands she can smell the soap (or anything else you might have on your hands) and she might not like it...

I just takes time mate make sure you handle her regularly for small periods of time at first, a few mins each day will be sufficient then up it to 5, then 10 and so on.

She SHOULD get used to it. I managed to tame a Californian King snake last year at work, it took 5 months but now he is a placid little thing.

As for the diet, if you are feeding locusts you could cut out the crickets but I would suggest you replace them with something with a higher nutritional value than mealworms. Go for Super Morio mealworms they are good for them. You could still feed crickets but maybe just hand feed her a couple, (once tame) or kill them first.

How old is she Blackie? I'm in work so can't see the pics from here to be able to tell. Apparently for the first six months it should be exclusively crickets as they're born at the beginning of the rainy season in the wild and there is an abundance of crickets, then fruit and veg should be introduced 50/50, and finally it's mostly a diet of fruit and veg with crickets or locusts as a treat when fully grown. So, if it's an adult lizard you could probably cut out the crickets.

I got my son a baby one a few weeks ago so it's diet is all crickets, they are a right pita and hide everywhere, it takes ages trying to get any stragglers out at night before turning the lights out. If they're left in overnight supposedly they'll nip the lizard as they're nocturnal. It's a very friendly and inquisitive wee thing though, puffs his beard and opens his mouth the odd time but we've been holding it for 15 minutes at a time twice a day and now loves being handled and will scoot up your chest or arm to sit on your shoulder quite happily.

  • 3 weeks later...
Hope she's settled down a bit Blackie. Ours has taken to climbing up my son's arm and settling on top of his head recently, he's getting very tame :)

Thats a sweet one. As for letting Zeeka climb anywhere she just cant be trusted, She'll launch and try to peg it, Which is hilarious in its self :D
