Need4Speed
I understand that the power steering is electronically controlled and linked to the speed of the car, but is there any mod that can be done to increase the feel/weight of the steering, without messing about with the geometry? Steve Cargill
Hi John, it could be that your speed conversion is done the 'wrong' way - most of them are. It divides the signal too early and the gearbox, PAS active spoiler etc are all messes up. The PAS feels much lighter than on cars propely done - I couldn't believe the difference when I drove a proper one. The difference in auto gearbox smoothness seems to vary, some cars it makes a huge difference and others hardly any. The TRL converter when propely wired in does is correctly. He does a combined fuel cut and converter I think.
Need4Speed
Cheers Steve, I'll speak to Pete about it. It's the nearest to driving a Chevrolet I've met. In fact it's as light as the steering on my Cherokee. The active spoiler does work at the right speed, but the cruise control stops at 69mph. Does this make any sense? Paul Whiffin
This is something I'd love to be able to do on my car, the one thing I hate about the Supra is the steering, way to light and lifeless. I've driven lots of Supra's now and it seems the 96 cars have more steering weight, dont know if they changed geometry or something. Anyway, there must a way of changing the steering weight somehow without messing around with geometry that is?
Tom
Yep it's another old thread revival!, I'm still looking for an answer to this, I have the trl conveter fitted but the steering is still too light, I'm still struggling to tell what the hell the tyres are doing! what can I do to get more feedback? Chris W do you have any ideas?
Paul Whiffin
Still in the back of my mind this one as well. I drive so many Supra's these days with varying amounts of steering weighting, most are light though but there is the odd one which has plenty of feel. I've done a complete suspension rebuild on my car, only thing I haven't changed is the steering column and I've tried different speedo converters which make no difference whatsoever, feels the same with or without a converter. The best Supra I've ever driven was a 2000 car, that was near perfect, just wish I knew what the answer was.
Tom
hmmm, must be something to toyota techs did on that later model I guess, I'll have a search around.
Chiefgroover
Messing with the geometery is the best thing you can do to a Supra's steering. A German chap reset mine without any reference to Toyotas specs. What I got was heavy steering with feel and progressive turn in rather than the usual back end provoking numbness then sudden turning. I dont know the exact settings but I did gather that more toe out, more caster was part of it. The car tram lined slighty on uneven surfaces but nothing to bother me. It put a smile on my face for weeks. Its the first thing i'll get done the next supra goes to the ring. TRD bushes helped some also. I would guess that CW's settings would be very similar to those the ex-porsche race team engineer set on mine.
Paul Whiffin
I've tried many different settings on my car without any noticeable difference to steering weight. To me it feels like there is to much power assistance.
Tom
can you remove the powersteering completely? and replace with a different unit? or just have none at all?
