Heyrick
Just watched http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00z8v18/Grand_Prix_The_Killer_Years/ on iPlayer (repeated from March so maybe this has been discussed already?). All before my time and very moving - esp. at the end with David Purley trying to save a fellow driver whilst everyone else looks on and the race continues! What a difference these days. Bailey.
I was abseloutly shocked, I couldnt believe how someone would die and the race would go on, unbeileveable, but it was just how it used to be, that really stunned me with the fire incessant at the end
Soop Dogg
Yep - that bit at the end was really quite disturbing. There was maybe a 10 second period just as he arrived on scene where if others had helped Purley, he just may have had a chance of getting to the driver and perhaps getting him out - but no-one did. The desperation in his body language was so evident, even trying to wave spectators over to help him help the other driver. Then whilst he was using the extinguisher you could see it dawn on him that nobody was going to help and he seemed to have one of those 'aah b0llox' moments as his urgency faded. Really dreadful to watch some bits, but a riveting program. Can't believe watching it now just how bad F1 was back then. I mean, Graham Hill getting spanners off spectators to remove Jackie Stewarts steering wheel to get him out of the car! He was trapped in it for over 25 mins! Unbelievable. For anyone who missed it, you've got to catch it on iPlayer.

Soop Dogg
i missed it im guessing it didnt show the south africa 76 incident No - in fact at the end of the programme it did mention that 1976 was the year when they finally had no deaths in F1. (Although there apparently weren't any in 1972, but they didn't mention that...)
letmeshowyou
Amazing programme. Well worth a watch!
imi
the program left me with the impression that colin chapman was one nutter whose hunger for success & breaking new grounds in F1 resulted in the lives of his drivers.
dr_jekyll
No - in fact at the end of the programme it did mention that 1976 was the year when they finally had no deaths in F1. (Although there apparently weren't any in 1972, but they didn't mention that...) im pretty sutre it was south africa 76 when a fire marshal ran across the trach and was pollaxes by a car doing nearly 200mph, he quiet literally splatterd everywhere and the driver was killed instanty as the fire extinguisher hit him in the face . not pretty footage my mistake it was 1977 the driver was tom pryce , WARNING ;;;; DO NOT SEARCH AND WATCH THE FOOTAGE IF YOU ARE EASILY DISTURBED OR UPSET. ITS VERY GRAPHIC AND HORRIFIC
Ewen
A shocking story, quite well told. The last segment was incredibly hard to watch, almost surreal in its focussed intensity being played out to thousands of onlookers whilst Purley lived through his personal hell alone. letmeshowyou
my mistake it was 1977 the driver was tom pryce Thats absolutely mental. What makes it even worse, is the driver and the other marshall just carrying on, as if nothing had happened

letmeshowyou
You could be right, but I wonder which. He was clearly beyond help at that time I suppose. Anyone around at the time that remembers any interviews? On a more positive note, Go Bruno!!
