I don't know the correct maths but surely the expansion of the universe is faster the further away from the center of the big bang? Which means time moves slower for them? So the galaxies in the center should be more advanced than us? We're all moving away quicker and quicker but time should be moving faster for some than others. I would imagine in the next 100 years or so we'll be advanced enough to go out and meet them, obviously if we develop tech to see further we'll only be seeing the light from millions of years ago so not seeing their true current state.

I think I remember reading the number of sightings have gone up too?

No sure how true this is Gaz but here you go.

The number of sightings the media reports upon has definitely gone up. Whether or not the frequency of 'real' encounters has too is anyone's guess :)

My thinking too Gaz :)

Though it is strange how I read about this about 10 years ago & it is happening now.

i did watch i very intresting series on discovery it was called something like masters of the universe or something like that it was truely amazing and intresting stuff (well to me anyway lol)

I think it was 'Master of the Universe' but I love the idea of it being Masters of the Universe, with Brian Cox as He-man etc...

Recently the number of planets in just our Milky Way galaxy has been calculated at approximately 50 billion, with at least 500 million of them residing in the Goldilocks zone.

Those numbers are just huge man *Takes drag on doobie*

And with an estimation of 500 billion galaxies to look at, I very much like the idea of life on other planets.

Depends what you were smoking whether it's real or not! :D

:D

Care to elaborate? :)

Sure...

As said, was out the back having a smoke casually staring at the sky as you do, and noticed a rather bright "star"...After staring at it for a few seconds it started to move away at a fair pace, then faded out . Figured it was just my mind playing tricks, or maybe clouds that just made it seem that way. Saw the same thing almost a week later, roughly in the same position but it was a perfectly clear night. Strange....

Then a few days back, just as i opened the door it caught my eye again. This time, it was already moving but it was at a slower pace in a different position, and took a longer distance to gradually fade out. Definately wasn't a plane, clouds or anything else that would make any sense. It fair freaked my mum out as well :D

Obviously not jumping to the conclusion that the little green dudes are up there scoping out the competition, but it certainly is a bit odd...:)

Sounds like an ISS sighting to me.

Personally, going by the way and speed it was moving, I don't think it was anything like the ISS or any kind of satellite/plane/man-made aircraft, but you could be correct. If i see it again i'll try get it on camera...:)

(just to add, by my original description it may seem like I meant it faded out over a period of minutes. The first 2 times it was about 2/3 seconds, and the third was about 6/7 seconds)

I think it's very nieve to think we are the only planet with life on considering the vast vast nature of the universe :)

Funny you should say that, i was watching a very similar thing the other night, incredibly bright light moving slowly across the sky, which then stopped for 10seconds, then carried on, the light got much brighter before disappeared behind some clouds and i lost it. Wasn't no plane that's for sure. I'm not implying it was a ufo, but it was something i've not seen in the sky before.

There is plenty of ufo / strange flying object footage on youtube, as well as plenty of different theories etc to what they are. Some believe the origins are from Nazi 3rd reich anti gravity technology developed in the war (who, apparently moved their base to one of the poles before the war ended and still operate from there with craft that look completely alien to the average joes peepers), some believe they are inter dimensional craft, others think its a government conspiracy using alien technology, blah blah. The theories are endless, all interesting stuff, just needs to be taken with a pinch of salt, or maybe a bucket load :D

Thanks dude, I asked because more & more people are seeing these sightings.

Try getting it on camera next time, though sods law it won't happen :D

There are many earth like planets out there. It's possible that there are many life forms out there that are very similar to humans. They also recently sent a probe to a moon in our solar system (I think it might have a been a Saturn moon or something) which had huge amounts of evidence for liquid. Although I believe there was mote nitrogen than oxygen. This means a good probability of life forms even if it is more than a few cells. All it takes is evolution.

I'm not sure we'll discover extra terrestrial life in our lifetimes, but I'm sure we will before the sun swallows us.

As far as I'm aware, no one has ever identified an earth-like planet as yet. Statistically, our position and planetary neighbours combining to make life possible and sustainable is infinitessimaly small, yet we survive and the infinite nature of the universe means there must be similar planets at vast distances from us.

I certainly "believe" we have never been visited by any alien form or craft. Its all stories, cover ups and mis-understandings.

And thats from someone who used to "see" UFOs all the time, including the well documented Orpington one.

Not sure if it's been covered already but there IS life on other planets. We've already found it, on Mars IIRC. There is also evidence of possible life on other planets in our solar system alone.

The problem in asking a question like this is you have to give people an understanding of the scale of the universe (just as we know it is plenty). We have absolutely no concept of just what infinite actually means. A great example is the video/slideshow showing the different stars, the distance between them and the difference in size. The earth is like a dot compared to our sun and our sun is a dot compared to a few of the other stars we know are out there. They are billions of years away yet we know they are there thanks to their light.

When you grasp just how vast space is, even just as far as we know it, there can be absolutely no doubt that life exists on other planets. Even intelligent life. Even if we are one in a billion, there would still be a billion+ chances to be like us. It is unlikely that we will find evidence to support this, certainly in our lifetime at least but it would be nice to have a breakthrough.

One of the issues for us generally is getting the concept of space aliens out of our head. Science fiction, TV, Movies, Books and comics have all painted a portrait of what life on other planets is like. We can't even begin to grasp what it would actually be like.

The right question IMO is not whether there is life on other planets... There is for sure, no matter if it's intelligent or not. The right question should be, were we visited by intelligent life already or not...

True true... there are bacterias that lives in jet engines... in volcanoes... in toxic dumps, etc etc etc...

And talking about how huge universe is...

This is pretty good video :)
