hodge
Hi guys Can someone explain the differences between the 2. I take it there both N/A boxes but that's all I know. Are they Pre-facelift and facelift or something. Thanks John
Swampy442
Nope not both n/a mate. The W58 was but the R154 is for turbo cars, the Mk3 Supra turbo, JZZ Soarer tt, Chaser etc. The R154 has a steel section towards the rear, the W58 doesnt, the 154 is stronger, Id assume longer geared as well. Heres a pic, 154 on the left
pedrosixfour
The MKIV W58 has the steel plate as well. Believe me, I know. It supports everything and the earlier alloy version was seen as the weakpoint of the W58 so they rectified it. Now we just break every part of the box except the plate! hodge
So which is the better box in the long run.
JakeG
One of the drift cars over here has r154 box in it 3 years now, running around 600hp, never had an issue with it, he actually had a spare one incase anything went wrong but sold it, I'm putting an r154 box in my car, sleeve fitment instead of bolt fitment to the drive shaft iirc
Swampy442
154 is the better in the long run mate. Problem is theyre getting rarer, especially with the shifter extension like the W58 or V16x boxes. Im also putting an R154 in my Aristo
Guest ugp
I've not popped mine, yet!
hodge
I've not popped mine, yet! Don't you need some decent BHP to pop a box.
Homer
As other have mentioned, the R154 is a MUCH stronger box. There are some significant differences in the gearing, the r154 being a long geared box so be careful you know how the ratio's will play out before fitting. I can provide data on that if you need more information about the ratio's.
Guest ugp
Usually. Unless you drive like an old lady! You should pop up and see the progress on mine, might change your tune on my build
j_jza80
The R154 is a brilliant box, just as nice to use as the W58 but much tougher by all accounts. Feels very civilized compared to the V160, though I happen to like the 6 speed box's clunky nature
Homer
FAO ugp. See what I mean by long geared, are you sure those tyre sizes are correct, they're huge!
Guest ugp
Thanks for that mate, yep tyre sizes are right As long as I can crack a ton in 2nd Im happy. Thanks again!
Kirk
So your revving a v8 to 10000rpm and want to crack 100 in second? That thing will feel slow as hell if that's the case IMO
Guest ugp
I must like slow cars
Kirk
I must like slow cars I wasn't implying your car is slow but with the lack of turbo, going off your build thread, and the length of the gears its will take ages to get up to speed. I also hope your internals are strong enough to turn 10k if that is what your planning.
Guest ugp
No turbo? Really?

Guest ugp
I've stopped updating the thread with the important stuff, people just copy ideas. It comes under the "new engine" though. And no, its not a v8.

Guest ugp
The twin IC's aren't, but the engine and what's bolted to it are. Not spilling any beans, but hope to turn up at Suprapod 2012 with it.

hodge
IMO, the whole point of a project thread is to share ideas with other members. I consider it an honor that people use my ideas, so to say I'm not putting details in a project thread cos people steal ideas is ridiculous. If that's the case and you don't want anyone to know what's going on, dont update the thread and have it removed. Simples.
