Scott
Just wondering if any of you guys enjoyed wine? I've been a member with Averys and Virgin for a couple of years now and absolutely love what they offer. I tend to stick with Virgin for the most part as the offers they have are just that little bit better. The wines are fantastic too, I've had some really good bottles over the last year or so. With Virgin they automatically take £20 per month out of my account. Everytime the 4th payment comes out they automatically give me £20 towards my account. I also get free delivery for rating the wines I have tried.
hogmaw
For a moment I thought you were asking Amy Wine Club members, as if Amy Winehouse was in a wine club I must have drunk too much of the stuff this evening

Dnk
Im not in any wine clubs but do a few tasting sessions and get my wine from several places. I recently found a very nice Pinot Grigio Delle Venezie 2009 Casa Defra Italy, a local restaurant sells it for £15 a bottle i now get it from Paul Roberts wines (just outside B'ham) for £4.50 a bottle and he does me a deal for cash http://www.strictlywine.co.uk http://www.laithwaites.co.uk http://www.paulrobertswines.co.uk

I find a glass or 2 quite refreshing also so won't go wrong.
Dnk
Im more of a red fan myself but like the odd white Chateauneuf-Du-Pape is a favourite, Chateau Fortia 2007 from the Rhone valley is delicous, its £23 a bottle though but worth every penny in my book. Goes very well with roast beef If you like your reds i strongly recommend you invest in a decanter, makes a world of differance even to cheaper reds. I bought mine from http://www.winewear.co.uk
Ewen
My late father was, and the wife and I regularly received 'special' bottles from him, via whatever club he was a member of. They always came with a note saying 'this one is special...at least read the label before quaffing' or words to that effect. Back in the early 80's, he had bought us a box of twelve 'special' wines as a wedding present. He visited us not that long after, and in the evening asked if we would mind opening one of these 'special' bottles he had given us. He was rather upset when Jane informed him that all twelve bottles had been necked pretty much within a week of us receiving them. Apparently he had gone to an enormous amount of trouble and research in choosing each individual wine, and had intended them to be used for birthdays, anniversaries etc. He was even less impressed when he asked us what we thought of each wine only to be informed, with the best level of fine wine critique we could come up with, that 'we loved the red, but we gave the white to our sister'. As was his way, he did his best to educate, encourage and inspire in all things vin, but to this day we stay with what we know....if its less than a tenner and doesn't have the ability to eat its way through three decks of Nostromo, we will probably buy it again. Brazil
A couple of years ago I was forced to drink a bottle of this wine below on my birthday whilst on holiday in Scotland. Apparently it’s a very chique wine and very popular in the city of Glasgow...! I personally thought it tasted like cough medicine! http://www.wineoftheweek.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/buckfast.jpg?w=
David P
For ten years I lived in a rural district of Champagne, during which time I was 'forced' to drink local wines until I developed a taste for the one's I can't afford.

God I remember Buckie. 15% alcohol, 40% caffeine, cheap, bonker juice. Parties weren't parties without Buckie. These days you drink Red Bull to keep going and red wine to go to sleep...back in the old days Buckie did both jobs at the same time. To hell with its nose and cheeky hint of Nescafe, I have vague recollections of naked nubile zombies and soaking wet sleeping bags.

Scott
Ahh Buckfast, I love to hate that stuff. You're description is on the money Ewen. When I sit up to watch the UFC I always get a bottle of 'tonic' and stick it in the fridge for the 3 o'clock rumble. I crack it open at 3 on the botton and drink it while enjoying the fights. By the time it's over (normally around 5.30) I'm ready for bed. I always wake up before 10 though, absolutely WIRED. I use it as a tool really. When I'm earlyshift on the Monday it would be difficult for me to get to sleep on the Sunday night if I had sat up for the fight on Saturday, due to sleeping half the Sunday away. With the tonic I'm up for 10 and shattered by 8. Spot on As a side-note. I managed to convince my Wife to drink a bottle once she hit her target weight, it was a deal we made after she used the excuse of her diet for not having any. She was absolutely blitzed before the bottle was done and loved the effect of it, although she really hated the taste. A few weeks later her friend was up visiting so we all decided to get a bottle for a laugh. This was a little snippet of what happened after they were finished... Ewen
This was a little snippet of what happened after they were finished... Brings those days right back to me. Except for the lack of sleeping bags, various bodies lying around and the extremely clean floor.
dangerous brain
I'm in the virgin wine club as well. I pop £30 a month in and wait til chrimbo and buy all my holiday wines with the extra £120 they give you on top of what is already a decent price for wine that is nice. I find the difference between the supermarket wines and the club wine is its much less generic and more discernible from grape to grape. I've also found that its handy in helping me decide what wines I do and don't like and enjoy which now stops me scratching my head at the wine counter wondering what I'm gonna buy. I'm in exactly the same boat mate. I really enjoy red wine and it's great to be able to rate the wines I have tried for future reference as to be quite honest I don't remember vineyards or grape variations etc. I'm a simple wine drinker where I know whether I like a wine or not by the taste, not by the writing on the bottle. The virgin club is fantastic for me because of exactly what you describe. It's better than an off the shelf supplier, as they are direct from vineyards they come at excellent prices and the offers they do from time to time are just unbelievable considering the quality. I did the same as yourself last Christmas. I think it was the bumper reds? Standout of the bunch for me at the moment is Beneficio Cellar Reserve McLaren Vale Shiraz Grenache Mourvedre 2008 (I remembered the Beneficio part which is impressive for me lol). A new firm favourite is Marques de Valencia Gran Reserva 2003. Highly recommend both of them, the Valencia wine was in the last case I bought which was an alleged "exclusive" at the time. The whole case was stunning to be honest.

One in particular was really nice, the other was good but not mind blowingly so.
Scott
Chateau Pailhas Grand Vin de Bordeaux 2009 Wild Plains Shiraz 2009 Zinio Garnacha Rioja 2009 Thoroughly enjoyed all 3 of those. I rated them all 4 out of 5, I keep the 5's for really really special wines Noteable mentions are: Three Blocks Shiraz by Nico Vermeulen 2009 Les Grands Chemins Old Vine Carignan 2010 I would have given them 3.5 but wasn't given the option. Any of you guys drink Sangiovese wines? I can't think of any that I have tried but I was driving the other night when out for a meal and REALLY wanted to try the one on the menu as it sounded lovely. It was bottle only though so didn't want to be cheeky and cork it lol. Really interested in trying one but don't want to go for the wrong one. dangerous brain
Took delivery of a perez cruz red at the end of last week that is awesome from virgin. Also picked up a selection of reds in the carrefour in Paris at the weekend which are impressing me with the quality versus price. Got a couple of bottles of bubbly that the uncle in law reccomended (he's french and a connesoir so they should be awesome) I'll look at the wines reccomended above as they seem to be in the same ilk as I like.
