Coolant leak - Diagnosis Required - Please help

Last night I got home to be greeted by a coolant leak. I left the car to cool down and went about looking over it this morning.

 

The leak appears to be behind and just below the pulleys and belt - I have tried to capture this is this picture: DSC_0018 (Large).jpg

 

I do have a video of it but am struggling to upload it at the mo (can't access media sharing website like youtube on my work PC)

 

So this morning at some godawful hour I went about looking over it and found the following:

 

After flushing the rad, swapping my lower rad pipe and refilling with coolant - the old coolant was old and a bit murky but not in terrible condition

However, there was a coolant coloured think slush in my overflow

My oil level was really low - i changed the oil this morning too

The leak continued whilst the car was running and not running - its a fairly rapid dripping

I blasted the heater whilst the car was running this morning for approx 6mins and no hot air came out at all

 

Any ideas peoples?

 

I will try and get the video uploaded but wont be able to do it until later

Water pump or radiator

 

How olds the rad ? is it the original one

 

Have a good look on the fan side of the rad for leaks, get the fan cowel off and even the fan so you can see better.

 

The heater matrix will have air in it hence no hot air cominig out, you'll need to bleed the system after you've found

and fixed the leak.

Thank DnK - Looking at it I suspect that it is probably the original rad - although the picture doesnt do it full justice, I am pretty sure the leak is originating from behind the fan, and behind the pulleys, when I stuck my head under the car this morning, it looked as though it could be from behind the alternator area

Thought I woud update just incase anyone had similar problems - This turned out to be a failed thermostat housing gasket.

 

On investigation I traced the leak back from the lower rad hose up to where it mounts to the engine - just behind where you clip the rad hose on there is a metal join, as it goes one of the bolts had broken off which to my untrained eyes looked as though where it was coming from however with a little more digging we got the bolt out and the gasket had perished.

Best and easiest thing to do is pour some coper in to your radiator. I had a big leak but it all stopped after i used "K Seal coolant leak repair "

In my opinion the best thing is to fix it properly, it doesnt take long to overheat a tt and

cook your c/h and then your in for a seriously big bill.

 

Rad weld and alike is for old bangers not your p & j ;)

Thought i'd update this a little more (for the benfit of DnK ;) ) - after further investigation a secondary leak was found...it would appear the bung has a tiny pin hole in it which is leaking coolant so I am looking at replacing the water pump housing/water pump! good work buddy...! lol

its all your fault! :p

 

It not a bad thing, at least its all getting fixed and I didnt ultimately blow the headgasket. As everything is coming off anyway I'm getting a new cambelt put on which the car is due for anyway so it kinda of ties it all together well....you did very well to indentify it from my upside down picture! and your advice got me going in the right dsirection when this first came about!
