straightsix
I take it everything is plugged in at the controller (above the head unit) ?

stevie_b
The problem is probably either a mechanical fault with the mast, or an electrical fault around the head unit / relay box. With the car engine not running (so you can hear better), do you hear any faint clicks when you switch your head unit on or off? There should be a click almost immediately after switching on, and another about 5 seconds afterwards. This is the aerial relay activating and then de-activating. If you hear clicks, I would take the aerial apart: it's a straightforward job. If you don't hear any clicks, it indicates the aerial unit isn't getting the signal to go up or down, so suspect a fault with the head unit or relay box mounted above the head unit.
