Paul R
Hi, Were looking for a new bathroom in our house. what do you guys think of B&Q and the bath Store? I think I'm lookinf for fitting too as I cant be bothered to do it myself this time - not enough hours in the day! If b&q and Bathstore are a no go, are there any tradesmen on here that can supply and fit in the north West/Cheshire? Cheers, Paul.
Paul R
Also - how much for a typical bathroom fit including: Whirlpool Bath, Shower, Toilet, Sink Tiles anything else that has to go witht he above! Bathroom is about 2.5x2.5m, so fairly small. Paul.
Digsy
I found that Bathstore are OK to supply but their aftersales care was total chaos which in the end made it simpler to just buy new parts from elsewhere rather than wait for replacements from the store. No idea on fitting as we did it ourselves. No idea on B&Q, but my girlfriend has a kitchen from Homebase (again supply only). She went for a fairly high-end painted door finish but due to a "quality issue" at the factory the doors managed to absorb moisture and swelled, cracking the paint in several areas. To be fair they did replace the lot free of charge, but the replacements did exactly the same thing after about the same period of time. Snooze
Big NO! to Bathstore. We are doing our bathroom in the next couple of weeks, and all the plumbers we have spoken to said no. Partly because of their after-sales like Digsy said, but mainly down to the fact you probably have to rely on their aftersales, because they use "continental" plumb fittings, meaning you can't just go down to B&Q to get replacement pipes and bits, apparently. Our bathroom is coming from Plumbbase.
ozz
I got one of my bathrooms from B&q, no problems whatsoever. I fitted myself though so really as long as you check it out in shop and you're happy with the quality I can't see an issue. Saying that, the first bath that turned up was scratched but they replaced it extremely quickly.
Paul R
Trade places only seem to do normal baths and showers.....were after something a bit more up market really. We want a whirlpool/spa bath with mood lighting etc. Bath store do one that looks a bit crap - b&q do one that is supposed to be good, but their bath's are poor quality apparently.... Paul. Shane
I recently bought a bog from B&Q, it was at least half the price of anyone else at the time, think it was called "Take away toilet in a box" or something equally as daft. The sistern is great but the seat which came with it was rubbish and broke straight away and the pan must be a strange angle/shape and without wanting to sound crude or put people off their lunch, the bog brush has to come out everytime after a number 2. Bloke I work with found the same thing too, he fitted it to his en suit and his seat broke the first time it was used and he has now bannished his kids from using it. Bath - 180cm x 80cm - £600 (hate small baths) store -Porcalinosa square close coupled Toilet & cistern - £400 ( reduced from £700)- store - B & Q Square sink, wall mounted -£25 - store - bathstore Good quality heavy chrome taps, hidden fittings - £150 per set ( sink & bath) Store - QS Supplies ( online) concealed shower controls - £260 good quailty tiler - £700 - look on tilers forum, plenty of people looking for work with other bits & pieces, plumbing bits, towel rail, bathroom cabinet, ip3 rated ceiling lights, 30mm travetine window sill top, totalled just under £5k & this was with me doing all the plumbing & electrics depends on how far you want to go once we added it all up, we were a bit suprised hope this helps
j_jza80
B&q and bath store are both crap They sell lots of rubbish, and some okay stuff. I sold bathrooms 'day in, day' out for 10 years so I know my stuff. I worked for an independent, so I'm not biased. IMO Duravit sanitary ware (pottery) takes some beating for the money, or Villeroy & Boch if you're feeling flush. Ideal standard is probably the best budget stuff. Bristan are a good budget manufacturer of taps, though ideal standard do some nice ones too. Showers I'd be looking at Aqualisa personally, Mira are not quite as good but probably a little more reliable. Again, Bristan are a good budget choice. Hansgrohe and Grohe both do fantastic taps and showers, but are expensive. Smiths plumbing supplies (SPS) do some nice budget baths and shower trays, though Mira 'flight' trays are good and light too. Frontline are a fairly good 'one stop' budget supplier, if a local merchant deals with them. R O Arnold are another, with top products and a price to match. Go to a proper merchant rather than B&q for your fittings, you'll save a fortune. The other problem you have with B&Q is a lack of spares support, which can be a very expensive issue in the long run. I've totalled up the main bits to 2100 (Bath, taps, sink, toilet, shower + enclosure, drainage) from b&q. Tiles I'm thinking about 1k. with other bits and pieces, I'm budgeting for around 4k in total for all the kit. I suppose it's going to be around 6k including labour isnt it? Balls, looks like I may be fitting another bathroom suite :-( Cant justify 2k on labour!

j_jza80
Who do you class as a proper merchant? Preferably an independent merchant, though plumb centre, jacksons, pts etc are all okay. Tracks Perkins are generally crap and expensive.
grahamc
B&q = hell NO!! They 7 months to deliver us a bath, that they said was "in stock"!! Then sent a big truck all the way from north London to Surrey, to deliver a set of taps (and no bath). Pathetic customer service, got told "cancel or wait" and then they hung up the phone!!! Supranature
Where in Cheshire do you live? If you can get to Liverpool I can show you a bathroom stockist whose prices, frankly, make some quoted on here baulkingly ridiculous.
