Guest merrick
Dear all, i need some help please .....i own a supra 3 litre non-turbo 24 valve 1992 - and it has just broken it's timing belt. Has anyone out there experienced this problem ?, and could they advise please on the estimated cost of repair? Or if you can recommend any local specialists who might be able to repair cost effectively ?, i am in burton on trent (just a few miles south of derby) the car and engine speed was very low when the failure occurred. The aa man thought that the engine was flooded and persited in cranking the engine over squirting easy start into the engine until he realised that the timing belt had broken!! I would very much appreciate anyones help and advice please ?? Many thanks in advance steve merrick
Noz
To be fair, he could have cost you a nasty penny or two. Due to the AA man trying to turn it over while belt BROKEN, I think the best course of action would be to get someone to take your head off and check your engine out before going any further. If you assume no damage has been done and start playing with replacing the belt things could just get worse. Considering the mechanic didn't notice the belt was broken, I would ring up the AA and ask them what they feel the chances are that his actions could have made the situation worse. You might be able to claim as cranking the engines without the cam shafts turning could be a really serious issue, and if it was the AA that caused it you should push to have them back repairing it. OR it could be fine. But I would definitely want someone to check my engine out first, just because you say he has tried to turn it over with the valves stationary. Trying to understand whats happening to your engine, if the belt is broken, the shafts won't be turning, therefore the valves would be in the same position regardless of the crack position. But if the pistons rise with the valves still in, there is a chance of damage? Either way contact the AA and tell them the situation and ask for their advice. If there is a chance the engine was damaged before the AA man even turned up, they argue the fact he mad it worse. This is just my opinion though mate, Im not a qualified mechanic, maybe someone else will have a better insight into the situation :-) Keep us informed! Noz
Cheaper to repair but not to check the damage?
Swampy442
The engines are non interference so there should be no damage at all.
caseys
The engines are non interference so there should be no damage at all. What he said. Valves will not have met pistons
Swampy442
Just get a new belt, set the timing up and away you go. But shame on you not replacing the belt in the first place!
Noz
dont forget to change the tensioner and idlers (-:
marc_p
Cheapest option is probably to just replace the engine.

wile e coyote
just put a belt on and start it , itl be fine
ilicos
What they said dude. 2JZ is a non-interference engine - This means that even if the belt goes you will not have the issue of your valves and pistons mashing each other up. Just put a new belt on and you're ok

XIL007
my friend did exactly the same.he had it it checked over, and just changed the belts and the car ran like it did before
Shane
As already said, its a non interference engine so it will be fine. The hardest job MAY be getting the crank pulley bolt undone so you can change it, but that said, you may be lucky.
