UK is a dangerous place these days, I've been living in Lisbon/Portugal for 2yrs now and have yet to see a bar fight or street fight of any kind. When I lived in Scotland and England this was guaranteed at least once every 2 times I went out at night.

The OP is in Ireland.

This is the failings of society, give them your hand and they shall take your arm.

No doubt if she did end up hitting your mate in court she would have blamed it on the drinks or do what most people do when they commit a bad crime & state they are in a unfit state of mind so possibly can NOT be responsible for their actions. She would have got 50 hours community service and your friend, scars he would have to live with the rest of his life. Her parents most likely go on to defend her saying maybe her mates made her do it, she never hurt a fly.

Just be weary when visiting clubs\bars mate, thinks kick off so quickly, or just avoid them. :)

Last time I was in Swords we'd a great night, Dublin's got very rough over the last lot of years though. I took a wrong turn on the way home from Dublin a while ago and found myself in a real dodgy area (lots of high rises, big wide road running through it, North of Dublin but not as far out as Swords, can't remember where it was).

I've 2 kids who I teach never to raise their hand (or foot, or glass) to anyone, I'm a big believer in sorting things out with words unless there's no reasoning with whoever it is, then it's time to walk away. But...if someone hits them first, whether it's a boy or a girl, then they should do whatever they need to to defend themselves. I had a girl (8 year old) at the door the other night saying that my wee one had hit her on the elbow, I called him over to get his side of the story and it turned out that she'd smacked him on the head first. I told her that she shouldn't have hit him first and sent them on their way.

I don't care whether people think I'm right or wrong for condoning him hitting her, I don't want him growing up and going out and something similar happening to him that happened to your mate Carlo and him thinking that he's not allowed to defend himself, especially if she decided to have another go after missing the first time.

As I see it, if someone's of the mentality that hitting/hurting someone is acceptable/the norm, then they should expect to get the same treatment in return.

We dont hit women, leave that to the cowards! Even though you would feel like doing it !

Dude your absolutly right men do not hit women!!! However the moment they want to act like a man treat them like one, if she's man enough to try and scar him for life or blind him shes man enough for a right hander. My pals Mrs used to go about " I can hit as hard as a man Bla Bla Bla" he kept telling her to shut up etc ended up with her giving me her best shot in my arm, as suspected pretty pathetic which I said, you do it to me she said, no thanks dont want to hurt you, all got a bit nasty and I made her put a phonebook in front of her arm and letting go, well afetr she picked herself up almost crying she conceded maybe she could not fight a man !!!!!
