help on which phone to pick !

Like not being open for apps. I know it brings security, but there are better ways of doing things. Shame on apple, the money grabbing pigs richer than the US itself.
Thats a developer issue not an end user restriction.

Totally agree it should be free'd up more but like you mentioned it brings a security issue.

Though saying all that, Jailbroken phones have plenty of unauthorised apps avalible.

Restrictions like?

Flash....

Expandable Memory

A battery that can be changed !!

My contract is open for renewal as of yesterday, so i'm looking to upgrade from my iFail 3G (not the 3GS !!!). I can catagorically say it is hands down the worst phone i have ever owned and i got it on a 2 year contract :( I know the 3GS is alot better, but the 3G is simply woeful. I'm half tempted by an iPhone 4 as i know they're alot better, but i will prob end up going for something different. As for the iPhone 5, i've no doubt it will be brilliant at doing eveything Apple wants it too do, its just a shame it wont do what the rest of the population want it too do. Plus, i'm guessing the tarrifs when its first released are going to be pretty poor with respect to cost vs minutes/texts etc.

Flash....

Expandable Memory

A battery that can be changed !!

Let me touch on these quickly as these 3 thing get banded around a lot.

Flash - Day in day out I see Java related viruses attacking our systems, flash as a lot of security issues relating to it hence why we don't install Java (apart from a couple which have applet based web consoles or GUI) or use IE on any of our servers. Apple has some more information on it here: http://www.apple.com/hotnews/thoughts-on-flash/

Expandable Memory - The biggest reason is due to read/write speeds & Apple's huge topic of control. As you will have noticed they like having control of their products & this not from recently Steve Jobbs has been like this from the beginning. He does not like anyone messing around with the hardware. Who knows what dodgy memory you might use on your iPhone if anything it is creating a security issue (infected cards etc). Expandable memory doesn't mean unlimited data space, I think the Samsung Galaxy S2 has max 32GB expandable with 8/16GB internal storage which only means you can have a maximum of 47GB lower than the 64GB you can get on the iPhone 4.

Changing battery - Of course you can, just two small tiny screws at the bottom & then either use a suction cap or a prying tool to take apart the phone. Takes about 5 minutes to do, colleague took his apart a couple of weeks ago as he wanted to clean the inside of his screen (he keeps dropping & looks like some spec of dust got in).

A phone is down to peference, you can have all the kit in the world but if don't like the way it feels in my hand I ain't buying it! For that reason I regret rushing & getting a Win7 phone. It is so wide & awkward to hold or put away in your pocket. Plus it isn't a great phone at all.

For restrictions I mean:

Media has to be itunes or only Quicktime.

Cant send pics or vids via Bluetooth.

MC slot (already mentioned).

No Flash player so cant view sites as there meant to be viewed.

But comparing the Samsung Galaxy s II to the iphone 4 its far superior with alot more features.

My mate with an iphone wanted to know some quick differences what mates it better and i hadnt deleted the file so heres a short list

1. Sumsung supports Flash Player

2. Samsung has 1.2 GHz Processor not 1Ghz

3. Bigger better AMOLED screen

4. 8Meg pixle cam not 5

6. Thinner

7. Andoid is better opperating system than iphone, sort example it has 7 dashboard for widgits etc.

8. Can send music + pics via Bluetooth

9. Dont need a PC to use it

10. Lighter in weight

11. Brighter Flash

12. full 1080p recording

13. Can use what ever music player to sync music

14. Better Battery (620hrs stand by)

15. Supports more moive files.

16. Has memory card slot

17. Navigation is better using Google maps and street view.

But the thing is because Apple is a technological brand you tend to find you will end up paying for it, normally about the £200 unless you have a stupid high contract! And that because the likely reason that 70% of i-phone users buy it because "its an i-phone and its cool"

A perfect example the other day is my mate Kev asked how much i spent building my gaming PC and his response was "Jesus you could have bought a Mac for that" of course i said "oh yer and how much do you know about PC's and how much more powerful my PC is! Kev what's a good spec on a Mac?" and he said "I don't know but there good aren't they?" pretty ironic he has an i-phone lol

Abz..... seriously? You are such a fanboi.

The restrictions on the iAnything are just insane. Yes you can geek your way around most of the restrictions by installing cracked software and voiding your warranties but there are still massive limitations. The fact that you need to install a 3rd party browser for flash (that isn't available anymore as I tried to get it for my iPad) is ridiculous. The fact that they(apple) have banned it (or they had when I checked recently) is even more ridiculous.

I could be here all night listing why the SGII is better than the iPhone4 but I don't have to. The professionals in this area have already spoken in their reviews and the masses have spoken with their feet. The iPhone is for people who want the easy life, as you say, the sheep who want to be part of the IT crowd and basically told what to do with their phone and their money :p

I'd rather do what I want, when I want the way that I want. Drag and drop works for me :)

You know I am :D

Thing is though a lot of people who tend to talk about an iPhone don't actually have one to compare against, I currently have these phones so can really base my views on what I have (iPhone 3GS, Blackberry Curve, HTC Desire, Samsung Omina 7). The iPhone is jailbroken & has been for the past 2 years, still works perfectly to this day! Though the phone has seen better days since I don't like phone covers!

Me & you have already discussed this so we already know the score with Apple which we both agree on.

With regards to price, I won't say that are expensive. I popped into PC World last weekend & thought I'd have a play around with the tablets while the wife doing some shopping. All the tablets were around £400 - 600 so same price bracket as the iPad. Out of all the tablets the only one which felt half decent was the Xoom, even the new HP felt plasticy & although it was running fairly quick I was keen on the GUI & that device cost £480 for a 32GB device.

And just before I go, I can drag & drop too ;)

I very much doubt Apple decided not to add Flash to the iPhone because they were looking out for our best interests Abz lol. I'm afraid i'm with Scott on this one, Apple are control freaks who want everything there own way with no compromise. Sure the iPhone is easy to use, and is stylish, but for me, its more of a fad which i'm sure you can agree they play on. My iPhone 3G, albeit two years old now is literally the most useless phone i have ever owned, and i'm using the term phone loosely as that actually implies it capable of making and receiving phone calls. Whenever i walk into somewhere with 4 walls and a roof i lose signal. Sometime i'm walking down the street in Norwich and lose signal for no reason, and its been like that since i bought it. Ive had friends ring my phone from two feet away with me on full signal and its gone to Voicemail lol. I digress anyway as my 3G is nothing like a 4 as ive read the reviews and used one and it is far superior to mine, but still i cant help but be left with a bad taste in my mouth. IF i buy an iPhone 4 next, it will be because i dont feel comfortable with any other ones and i'm simply settling for something i know, but rest assured i will exploring all options before i even think about going back to Apple.

Nicely said scott..

SupraDan24, If you have an issue and stress with signal DON'T GET THE IPHONE 4 it looses reception the way you hold the bloody thing lol my mates are always moaning about that..

But at the end of the day get the phone thats best for you (aslong as its not an iphone :p) lol

But seriously have a good read with that link I sent you, see what features suit you and check out prices with contracts. But my advice is the GSII as it has all the features from every other phone +more :)

Yeah, but can you run flash on it??? No. A TABLET PC that you can't run flash on? It's ridiculous. Everything worth having you have to pay for. Development is restricted and licensed, it's a nightmare for anyone wanting to actually do anything on. I have the iPad, many of my friends and family have the iPhone. A few of them tout it like fanbois until I show them how a phone should work. I would easily have held up my desire next to an iPhone and shown why it was better. In that instance though it was apple and the software holding the iPhone back as the iPhone4 hardware is fantastic (I think everyone would agree with that). The build quality also was very lacking on the desire, it didn't look bad until you held it next to an iPhone.

FFWD onto the latest models and the iPhone hardware is blown out of the water. Just about every element is beaten now by a few contenders on the market (Sensation and SGII are the obvious ones). The IP4 has a better screen than the Sensation but the SGII wins that one overall (I really like the touchscreen sensitivity on the IP4 though).

You've broken your phone and you can drag & drop etc. Lets look at the main reason for getting an iPhone, stated by yourself numerous times, 'Simplicity', 'It just works', 'Ease of use'. All those statements are true but the fact that to make the phone truely useful from a geeky technical point of view means that you have to be a tech geek to get it working properly. The other phones may involve a bit more of a learning curve in order to get a grip of the wealth of features and how to use them.... but that's only because you are able to use the various features of the hardware. Very simple example that has been mentioned, sending anything other than a picture over Bluetooth.

I would have taken the standard desire over an iPhone nevermind the phone I have now. In a perfect world I would have had a hybrid of both (previously). An iPhone running android with full access to the hardware realy would have been a phone to be scared of. Style, build quality, performance with the flexibility and useability of android would blow anything on the market out of the water.

The trouble is the modern phones have now caught up in the areas they were lacking, while they are still leagues ahead on the software front (for anyone other than a grass eater).

Totally agree Dan without a doubt they are control freaks & Jobbs has been since he started Apple. A few reasons behind that & if you see recently the whole technology industry is keen on the "dumbing" down theme, which is frustration for us techs but that is the way systems will end up going.

I am due an upgrade & the Samsung is without a doubt up there but it looks too wide for comfortable use (for me anyway), seems like the same width as my Omina 7 which I don't like. All the iPhones are the same only quicker hardware specs have been put in, the 3G like my 2G is very slow! You so should have got a 3GS! If I was you Dan, I'd go instore & have a good play around with them all. I have a good friend who works in Fleet Street London T-Mobile store who normally let's me get my hands on all the gear together, good advisor too.

When i got my 3G, the 3GS had just come out and i didnt know anything about it. The guy in the shop actually told me it was just a bit quicker and had a stupid compass thing on it so i decided to be tight and get the 3G as, as far as i was aware, it was the dogs ganglies. Regretted that decision for 2 years lol. SG SII is top of my list for looking at when i get home, if i like it, i'll definately be going for it over the iPhone. I'm not too bothered about the size, i have man size hands so it'll easy fit ;) haha.

I gotta nod of now but I'll be brief.

I do agree on a lot of your points but I never had to break my phone. Just waited for Apple to fix it & then release it into the new OS which they sent out. Another iOS update is due out in September.

My iPhone 2G I spent ages cracking it & that was then when Jailbreaking was unheard of (about 3 or so years back). My currently 3GS I jailbroke in about 5 minutes, all I had to do was going to a URL! So no you don't have to be a geek to get it working properly.

Like you said I'd like HTC to build a better quality phone, they got the OS right after a few attempts. I like the sound of the hybrid you mention. Infact I think I remember Gav already doing that?!?

Good night gents :)

Sorry, by 'breaking' I meant Jailbreaking :D

I remember Gav mentioning it, I wasn't sure if he had tried it or not. I haven't looked on the dev forums for android on the iPhone. It would probably be able to port to an extent but I doubt it would be fully integrated.

Night night :p
