Well, I have had better days! UPDATED

I don't normally post up personal stuff but as I have met and befriended quite a few people on the forum I thought that this was the easiest way to let people know of my health news.

For a little while (about 3 months) whenever I swallowed anything I had a very acute pain behind the base of the sternum. I went to see the Doc out here and he decided to treat me for GERD - Reflux disease but TBH, I wasn't convinced. Anyway, after 6 weeks of tablets it was no better and the pain was getting worse and so last Thursday I had an endoscopy done. Bugger me it was horrendous! They found an ulcer (which was expected) and also a polyp (growth) which was not. They then did cuttings of the growth and sent them off for biopsies.

I got the results back yesterday and sadly the polyp was malignant and I have cancer of the oesophagus. The next stage is to fly to Athens for an ultrasound scan to see just how deep into the oesophagus wall the cancer has penetrated. If it is on the first layer then they seem to think there is a good chance of full remission by doing a procedure known as ERM.

I will keep you informed.

Really sorry to hear this Colin. We have had an experience recently where a close friend did not act quick enough and the NHS were also slow in reacting.

If you need to Colin get looked at privately and get a quick diagnosis.

My thoughts are with you my internet dad..!!

Sorry to hear your news. My little nephew had cancer in his lower leg at 11 and has made a full recovery and even faced with the fact he may lose his leg he still managed to make jokes about saving money on the amount of socks he would have to buy and getting a better parking space when I take him out.

Stay positive and we are all but a keyboard away if you want to talk :)

I'm really upset to hear your news Col. :( :unfair:

I know you were receiving the treatment for GERD but to be honest it sounded like it wasn't helping much. Do you think you'll come back to the UK for treatment at all?

I'm wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery.

Thanks for all the best wishes folks

I am flying to Athens on the 9th to have the ultrasound scan done and depending on that I will decide whether to get treatment here or back in the UK. TBH, it depends on the cost and time scale out here and / or the time scale back in Blighty.
