Josh
On the way to Newquay doing 70 in 5th and if I put the accelerator down more than half way it was making a clicking sound that I could feel through the pedal then it started losing power. That stopped and then about 10 miles later the car was juddering and hesitating. Then it started losng power so I pulled into the services. On the way in it started making a loud knocking sound and was idling really rough. Any ideas and help would be appreciated as we need to get there. Thanks. Dnk
Loud knocking from an engine usually means something fairly serious and probably terminal. Is there any oil in it ? water ? did it overheat ? wheres the loud knocking noise coming from, top or bottom end, more info req to be able to help Aren't you in the AA or RAC ? Josh
It's knocking from the top of the engine and it's intermittent. There's enough oil and water in it. The temp gauge usually stays just into the "normal" part even on long drives. No loss of fluids or anything.
Dnk
My first guess would be a valve related problem What Fiesta is it ?
stevie_b
Is it pinking? Does it make the noise in other gears too at low revs, when you push the accelerator down most / all of the way? Is it a loud rattling sound?
Josh
My first guess would be a valve related problem What Fiesta is it ? Just noticed the oil and water and quite low but not that bad. It's a '96 P reg, 1.3. Going to top the oil and water up now and see if that does anything, but I doubt it.

Josh
I started it back up and it makes the noise just idling. It's hesitating badly and the revs are dropping almost to the point of cutting out. The knocking noise is intermittent, not constant. Dnk
Do you have any tools with you ? Can you get the rocker box off and check the tappet clearances, you might even have a broken rocker arm hence the top end noise and juddering inc losing power Which services are you at ? Josh
Just got a RAC guy to check and he's had a look and said one of the camshaft lobes has deformed or been damaged somehow and it's an engine-out job and probably over £500 to fix. The car only cost £800. No idea what to do as anything we do will cost a lot more than the car's value.
richarde7927
ill take it ,its a 1.3 petrol , those engine are poo for eating cams, push rods and rockers . but the good thing is that engine was used right up to 2008 so there are loads on the second hand market , you get one for £100 . but that does not help you right now , just get off the motorway at least that way when it brakes down it will not cost you £150 to get tow'd off . Rich.

Exeter services are off the motorway I'd try and get to where you were going then join the AA/RAC then call them when you are coming home Newquay is 90 ish miles from Exeter so good luck Edited July 29, 2011 by Dnk (see edit history)

Dnk
He is kind of but you actually get off the motoraway to get to the services, the end of the M5 is approx 5 miles away then its the A30 all the way
Josh
Right, the nearest garage will charge £40 to take the car to theirs then probably about £200 in labour just to have a look. Then there's the cost to fix it so maybe £450 in total, maybe more. I'm going scrap the car, then luckily as my Dad's in Bristol at the mo', he's going to pick us up and drive us to Newquay then I'll hire a car and drive back on Sunday. What a cock up!! You scrapped it within one day? You should have just brought a replacement engine! I am sure they sell for like £100 or so, then sell it on? You reclaimed the road tax dude? Josh
Didn't want to take the Supra as we're in a B&B and the parking's on the road. Plus there are a lot of drunken idiots about on the night so didn't want to have to worry about it. The car would have cost a few hundred to bring back, plus the cost of the holiday (had to leave £50 as a deposit). Altogether it worked out better to scrap it and get a lift down. It's only a cheap Fiesta. I'll pay a bit more for the next one! I did get the tax disc out too so I'll claim that back Monday. Now to carry on the drinking
