tbourner
I'm still looking at getting a chinese bike. It seems from my research the biggest issue is who put it together - as they're normally shipped in a crate so Joe Bloggs would build it in his shed thinking he knows what he's doing, comments like "I don't need a torque wrench, monkey wrench is fine" etc. etc. I'm getting a garage to build mine. The other big factor is rust, since they use cheap materials they rust quickly. I could obviously buy a nice selection box of mixed nuts and bolts for when things ping off - but I'd also like to stop the metalwork rusting. So what's the best thing to use on new metal? I know most have all this nonsense about it only working on clean dry metal, must have all loose surface brushed away etc. I don't need to worry about any of that. Do I just paint it? Waxoyl it? Buy one of those scamming cathodic reaction deals? Vaseline? Also, bike cover or not? Some say they 'sweat' under them causing more harm than good? neilp9876
A friend of mine has a farm in Malaysia and just bought a Chinese tractor. It lasted 3 hours before breaking down Not sure who put it together but i think you might need a good set of spanners. What sort of bike is it, do you have a link? neilp9876
It looks ok, reminds me of the CG125 for some reason. How come your going for one of these rather than a second hand bike? Do you not fancy building it yourself, it should be fairly simple to do and you could always get it mot'd or checked by a garage to make sure it is ok. neilp9876
To answer your actual questions I would probably paint the frame etc in smooth hammerite, that should last for years. The bodywork and plastic should be ok. As for covers I kept mine under them for years and they were fine, i am fairly sure its better covered against the rain and frost than left exposed to it. tbourner
It's based on the Yamaha YBR as far as I know, same engine used in all the copies (GY6 152QMI). My choices were between a 3-4 year old YBR125 (£1400), a brand new AJS Eco-125 (£1400) and the Sanya (£800). Since the AJS is built in China anyway I figured I wasn't gaining much, so it's between the other 2, and then I figure since I'll only be on it for 18 months or so I'm better off with a brand new bike - no MOT, warranty, no hassles. I know the YBR will be worth more in 18 months but there's always the risk of something going wrong no matter how reliable they are.
neilp9876
I have just had a look at the bikes on ebay because I thought you'd be able to get something decent for less than 1k, it seems I'm wrong and that they are pretty expensive. I take it youve just passed your test, hence the 125, otherwise you could get a bigger bike that may be cheaper? I am about to put my ZX7R up for sale for 1200, but I might need to double check its value if prices are not what I expected.
tbourner
I've done my CBT, planning on riding the 125 for a year then doing the test. I'll still only be able to get a 250 after that for 2 years then (although they're changing the test from 2013).

tbourner
Thanks but I've heard every single piece of advice for chinese bikes already, I've listened to them all, done my own research and come up with my own decision. Now I need to know about rustproofing - anyone?
jackso11
That is a honda CG125 copy for sure. If you are getting it to learn on and just to have as a first bike I wouldn't worry about rust proofing. Just by it, learn, reide it a bit, sell it. There is not really a lot you can do to rust proof it if the rust just comes from low grade materials. You could take off all the nuts and bolts and have them anodised, thats about it. Iky
Have a look on the Bilt Hamber website. Their rust proofing stuff works. http://www.bilthamber.com/
