Abz
I am hoping you guys can help me out here. My sister stupidly brought a Mercedes A Class Auto (2004 Diesel) without me having a look & it now has developed a gearbox fault where it goes into a limp mode & only uses 2nd gear. They had a local garage have a look & they advised it is an electrical fault with the gearbox & that the gearbox ECU needs to be replaced. Now she brought the car for £2,500 and the main dealer has advised that it could cost up to £2,000 on replacement including parts & labour! The car has only done 70k too! She is in bits & doesn't have that sort of money to spend on just an ECU, anyone or traders on here come across the same issue with the A Class? Looking online it seems that this is a common problem & some people even had the issue with only covering 39k! That is just ridiculous! I have had a look online & one company offers repairs to the faulty module for roughly £250. Anyone have any other suggestions apart from selling it for £45? imi
If the problem is with the gearbox itself (which it was with my wife's a160) then it will be close to 800-1k to get it sorted. I'd be surprised if It was just the ecu; Not many are willing to work on the car to get it fixed, we got ours sorted by a decent mechanic in perivale with a warranty. There is a website by a chap called LOFTY that is the bible fkr the a class. Have a read through there. Here is LOFTY's website http://www.aclassinfo.co.uk/mypage.1.htm
Abz
Thank you imi I noticed some web pages from this Lofty person too whilst having a look online, I'll look into that link. Like you mentioned we went to loads of garages and they didn't want to work on it, others said they will attempt a look at it, changing oil etc first and see how it goes but advised that this would be a more replace and see exercise which I didn't think would be the most cost effective route to take! The garage which I first took it to did a diagnostics and then had an electrician round to have a look, the electrician advised that it was a fault with the gearbox ECU. The garage scribbled some error codes down, which I have listed below. P1221 Can communication disturbed traction system current/stored code. P0600 Can Stored Code. P2204 Undocumented code control module ics trouble code stored. It is difficult to get a trust worthy garage in London these days to carry out the work\fault finding. It has already cost her £150 to find out the information above.
