Cant seem to get hydrated after a night out!

Thought I'd see if any other old farts suffer from this!

Basically I went out on saturday to a party and drank quite a bit of ale. about 7 pints of dark ale and a couple of spirits. I wasnt hammered, but very happy!

The thing is, I got a hangover the next day and I can still feel it today. I used to be able to drink loads of water to get rid of a hangover in a day, but now I cant seem to get hydrated. For the first 2 days I drank loads of water and every time I did this, 10 minutes later it would go straight through me. Is that my kidneys not working or something??

When I was in my 20's I used to go out, get hammered, recover by the next day and go out again!

I dont drink that much very often any more...maybe once or twice a year. The rest of the time I dont have more than 5 pints and it doesnt really affect me the next day.

Paul.

Irn Bru & something with high salt content will cure what ails you.

I've also found Powerade to do a decent job of re-hydrating. I don't like water (no really). Ideally you want to get your sugar levels up a bit too hence why I recommend the well known hangover cure (Irn Bru).

I don't know the medical reason for this but, even though salt is bad for you, your internals don't like your body running low on sodium. Obviously you sweat a lot more when you are drinking (salt & water go bye bye) and the alcohol in the beverages make you wee a lot so you tend not to hold of what you are drinking (hence the dehydration). Replenishing all these things to the levels they should be is really the only way to shift a hangover.

Make up your own system but Irn Bru, Scotch Pies & chips with salt will always have you right as rain within hours :)

This is where I rub in the fact that I have never suffured a hangover and I have been known to drink a lot! But always up bright and breezy the following morning :D.

p.s. Drink Coke, a hangover is more sugar deficiency than it is de-hydration ;).

I've been eating like a horse too!! Had cravings for sausages (had 10 yesterday in 5 rolls) and chockie chip cookies. That should be enough salt to sort me out surely??

Obviously not ;)

Get yourself around 2l of Irn Bru (if you like it), coke is a reasonable substitute but not quite on the same level. Make sure you drink it in a day, feel free to drink water too as I know it can give you a sticky throat. Get yourself a mince pie with shortcrust pastry, peas, chips and cover it with salt. Get that lot down you and I guarantee you will feel LOADS better.

I generally don't get hangovers unless I really leather the drink (20 pints or so) but I think that's down to me getting the munchies after a good knees up. I always head to the local indian for a kebab, chips & cheese and a bottle of bru.

Years ago my pre-emptive strike would be 2 boxes of micro chips covered in salt and 2 pints of Irn-Bru before bed. Next day I was fresh as paint..... although probably still a little drunk :D

35.

Jesus. From the first post I assumed you were late 40s/50s...:D

Drinking 2 pints of water when you get home is always the best thing to do. If you are de-hydrated and then go to sleep for 8 hours or so you will have problems.

All the things said above will help but I would try to prevent rather than cure and try to drink a glass of water every few pints, although you may be called a girl by your mates you will be the one who's steady at the end of the night and not the one who's talking about quittting drinking the morning after....;)

exactlly what i do, two pints of water and two paracetamol (I no you are not supposed to use them on top of drink) but never have a hang over, a multi vitamin tablet before sleep is always good to as you loose allot when hitting the drink hard.

I know all of the above really.......but the thing is that I never used to be like this. must be old age?

Definitely catches up with you. In my late teens early 20s if I felt rough the next day I would be fine by the afternoon. Mid 20s it was later in the day before I felt OK and even then I would still be a little shakey. Now if I get a proper hangover I can still feel the effects for a couple of days. Not really a hangover as such (no sore head or feeling sick) just a feeling where I know I have had a drink.

Not really sure if it makes any difference but in my teens/early 20s I was out at the dancing giving it some most of the night. In my mid 20s it was more sitting around with a little bit of jigging. Nowadays I generally don't move off my backside. I'm guessing that most people will be in the same boat, so perhaps that is where it comes from rather than actually being to do with getting older.

A hangover is just a good excuse to do nothing the next day :)

Saying that though, I went out and got trollied both Saturday and Sunday last weekend and felt fine due to eating a large meal with the drinks.

Last Thursday we just had drinks and I felt awful Friday!

7 pints? It's possibly an age thing, I can't process as much ale as I used to without ill effects the next two days. I find drinking a pint of water before going to sleep helps. Plus a sugary drink the next morning. 10 pints is considered de rigeur in my local, more if the slightest thing is to be celebrated, which they have to an art form. I am considered an amateur with my modest 6 or 7 pints.

Err how old are you?! Come back when you're a little older. ;)

Eggs - they help clear the toxins out of your liver.

Honey - a great way to raise your blood sugar level.

Bananas - Magnesium and potassium in abundance (your body loses these when you drink).

If you're still suffering and it's 4 days on, you might have a bug. If might be best to try some healthy food rather than shovelling a load of crap down you - crap is good for perhaps the day after. Berocca is also really good for replacing the vit C.

I'm just having trouble reading this thread. Must be my eyesight.

Yes, after 35 years on this planet for yourself, I'm afraid it's all down hill from now on.

Soon you'll be chosing a comfortable pair of slippers and probably visiting www.pipes'r'us.com

35. It's the new 75, or something.

Cheers.

I usually stumble into the local Ramen shop on the way back from the pub for a feed, then a couple of these (helps the liver to break down the toxins) with a couple of bottles Gatorade from the local vending machine.

Bowl of Miso soup in the morning also helps, although I'd rather have a bacon sandwich.

Heard good things about Iron bru, but it's impossible to get the stuff here.

If I have a late one (pub closes at 6am) then I'm a write off the next day and feel like crap for at least another day, if not two.

Try to avoid that these days, too painful.
