Nic
Does anyone own a Smart ForTwo 700cc petrol turbo or has driven one? I'm trying to diagnose a turbo issue on one at the moment. Before when driving you could feel the turbo come in strongly at around 2-3k rpm in the first 3 gears then once in 4th it would overboost and the ECU would go into limp home mode. I've found that some clown had mixed up some of the piping between the boost solenoid and the wastegate actuator, which from what I can tell completely disabled the wastegate. I've put all the pipes back to stock and taken it for a test drive but now don't feel any surge from the turbo, just linear power delivery through the rev range. The problem is that I've never driven one before so not sure how they are suppose to perform, I expected with the wastegate now working that it wouldn't pull as strongly but I'd have expected to feel the turbo coming online. Next step is to fit a boost gauge to check it is making positive boost. In the meantime if anyone has driven one could you describe the performance/power delivery? SaqTRD
Hi Nic, I drive a mates one quite a bit, the turbo coming on boost isn't very noticable to be honest. I think you've fixed it and now have normal performance where as before you had a BPU Smart! LOL Hope this helps Saq
Westcoaster
It depends what model you have as well, they are mapped at the factory to power outputs starting as low as 61bhp. Have a look at this site, http://www.evilution.co.uk/ this guy knows a lot about Smart ForTwos. The Model code for the car you have is a Smart 450. Nic
All sorted an IC pipe had blown off, reattached it and the turbo is definitely kicking in, it's also no longer overboosting and going into limp home mode so job done. Now to refit all the plastic bodywork bits back on!

JustGav
Oooh that has chewed something up... I 'HAD' a 599cc version which got funny on me, but due to lack of time I binned the project. The turbo's are usually easy to find about though... I can ask the guys I was getting parts off if need be.
Nic
Oooh that has chewed something up... The whole shaft is rattling around loose inside the housing, looks like the bearings went and the corners of the compressor have smashed into the housing. The turbo's are usually easy to find about though... I can ask the guys I was getting parts off if need be. Cheers Gav, I think I have a source for a replacement, if I get stuck I'll give you a shout.
Chris Wilson
Is the turbine housing cast as one piece with the manifold? Looks expensive, how much would they rush you for a new one? Still say flog it and get them a Yaris or an IQ

It was one of my Dad's inspired Ebay purchases Definitely be flogging it if I can remember how all these bits go back together So much for German engineering, definitely not impressed
