Supra_Al
I was wondering wether it is a bad idea to jump start my Supra with jump leads??I have known a few other makes of cars that have done this and have ruined their ECUs! A mate of mine for instance has fooked his ECU on his cossie, by doing this.Luckily for him it is relatively 'cheap' to source another one.(under £100 second hand) I'd hate to think what it would cost for another ECU on our Supras, not very cheap at a guess? Such an easy mistake to make as well, especially when stuck with a flat battery. Has anyone had any dealings with this subject as it may save us a bit of cash. Al. (not using 'jump leads' on the Sup)
Adam W
Not a problem AFAIK. There was a post from TDI Nathan or TRL Pete about it a while back . . .
Supra_Al
What does "AFAIK" mean. I know it should be obvious! Al.

Syed Shah
I have jump-started the TT once, no damage done. Wouldn't make a habit of it tho!

Yeah, aftermarket electronics hate it too - anything from guages to controllers. I fried an Apexi AVC-R last time I done it... Gaz.

I did not know that. I have only done this once and then purchased a new battery but, thanks anyway. I'll remember this.

We've yet to pop any electronics through jump starting and that includes the industrial mobile starter we use if a battery is REALLY hammered. And believe me, it goes. I've yet to find anything it won't start! I'm not quite sure why some people are blowing electronics via jump starting to be honest. Only the foolish would have hundreds of pounds worth of add-ons fitted without fuses... Cheers Nathan TDI PLC
Supra_Al
I'm told damage is caused by an electrical 'Spike'.Maybe it affects certain types of vehicles? Al.
Neil Sandham
Battery in mine is shafted. If I leave the car any longer than 3 or 4 days without running it is flat. Have had to jump start many times - no problems( touch wood) with ECU or AVCR or Alarm etc etc. AS nathan said I cant see how you are blowing electronics unless there is no fuse in line. Ie it is hard wired to the battery instead of going via the spare accessory fuses in the fuse block. Even then I always fit an inline fuse. Cheers Neil
dude
Got to agree with Nathan , my car had a totally goosed battery and we put the big industrial starter on it , some numpty switched it to 24v and the turbo timer exploded into flames but it didnt damage the ECU or anything else . Thats what fried the Apexi I think... The controller was alright (sometimes used to switch itself off though, never did before the jump start) it was the solenoid that was goosed...
