Coolant Usage!

Hey

Just got the complete system flushed, and toyota 4 Life put in! But my Q is aound the expansion tank,I top it up about half way and everytime I seem to drive the car the system takes all the collant from the expansion tank!!

When cold I could not even top the car up if I tried; its full but where is all the coolant in the expansion tank going!!

Is this normal, Any Idea's! I will check around the expansion tank and hose for leaks but no leaks after she is parked up and no over heating issues.

Just curious if anybody else had this?

Did you bleed the system when you filled it up? Not too sure what would happen but is there air in the system?

Sure did, I am alone the lines of thinking it is taking in what it needs but as far as I know she took around 7/8 liters

Colin did it , Supra Specialest Ireland; just wondering if this is normal after!

Its one of 2 reasons

You either have air in the system and the system is drawing in the coolant from the

expansion tank when the car cools, if this is the reason after a while it should stop happening.

Or you have a leak in the system and the coolant in the

expansion tank is being drawn into the system to replace whats being lost.

I had a leak on my car and it was a drip from the bottom hose, hardly noticeable but

enough for me to have to keep on topping up the expansion tank

2JZ GE Auto = 8.3 Litres

2JZ GTE Auto = 8.8 Litres

2JZ GTE Manual = 8.9 Litres

As has been stated it sounds like an air lock to me. I believe the fact that it doesn't have a bleed nipple makes it slightly more tricky to get all the air out. I think it was Dunk who told me to park on a hill or jack the front of the car up to make it easier.

Wasn't me Mike :) I've never had to do that but yes it would help, if theres an airlock then

the air isn't getting out so why would the expansion tank keep being empty ?

How many times have you re filled the expansion tank ?

Thanks for the help ;)

She is not overheating, if anything running too cold; Colin may of put in 9 liters I just know it was alot. He was working on her for a good 45mins getting any airlocks out and as a precaution I did get the lower Rad pipe changed.

I will take a look for any leaks and see how she gets on with the expansion tank topped up; Dunk this is the 2nd top up of the expansion tank so far.

She has taken roughly 1 liter in from the first top up & what was orginally in there from the garage!

Could well be some air still in the system!

When testing for any leaks is it best to bring the car up to temp or is it all the same considering its coolant ?

I'd have a go at bleeding it incase theres still some air in there, is the heater blowing nice and hot ?

After that i'd check for leaks which i'd do with the system pressurised at normal running temp

To be honest I only drove her on hot humid days so far, I had the heating down at its lowest and the window open! But I will check her this weekend, I know Colin did check all that but I was day dreaming as usual ha ha!

Since it was done I did only drive her a handful of times! Road tax is out again another 365 euro for 3 months :( Feel like crying handing it over

I will bring her for a spin to get her up to temp and check for leaks , thanks again ;)

Your mechanic should of had the heater on full hot when the system is bled, worth

checking that first as a cold or luke warm heater points to an airlock or sludged up matrix

Now that you say it, it rings a bell; Colin did that, I remember asking him why he had the heating on full whack

It was at the end of the day, after a 3 hr drive up there and up since 6am ; I was hwalf dead at that stage!

Jellybean, I'm in the exact same boat as you at the minute. Had an engine flush and rad flush carried out in Urban Performance in Dublin last week. I've done around 160 miles since then and I checked the expansion bottle this afternoon. It was more or less empty, but I'm putting that down to air in the system and a dodgy seal on the rad cap.

I've replaced the rad cap this evening with a Buddy Club cap, so I'll check after a similar amount of driving and see if that solves the problem. If it doesn't then I've a leak somewhere in the system.

Did you have any problems before the flush? This sounds like a defo air lock to me. It will take a good while for the bubbles to find their wayto the top of the system. Have you undone the pipes at the back of the engine to see if they are full?

Feel like it? I WOULD be crying! Please tell me you pay that because you don't have to pay insurance!?!

Unfortunately the insurance is probably more expensive. My road tax and insurance bill this year will top 2500 euro!
