Darren
Battery playing up on the car bought new one but circular terminal connections on my car very small, so no fit. Have I got the wrong battery? The suppliers says not or have I got to change all the connections? The earth is clamped on to the cable not bolted so it does not look like fun. Anyone please? Steve W
I'm SURE I checked a few weeks ago ('cos had doubts in the cold weather !)... I'm almost positive UK and Jap' have same battery/same terminals.(the cold may have affected 'me brain) I think it's a 015 type (well that's the most common number, some company's use different system) It's ALMOST the same as a normal Vauxhall one (063 or 065) but as with most Jap's it's a little taller but little thinner, so, it's easiest/best fit to get proper one.(and, as usuall, you'll pay ~30/50% more for VERY similar battery !, oh well!) I'll double-check mine/UK/book tomorrow and tell you FOR SURE what Jap/UK are 'supposed' to have. FatS. [ps. there ARE two sizes of 'round-pole' terminal, small/large, I didn't think ours was the 'funny' small type, but, will recheck that as well] ANYONE ELSE KNOW IN THE MEAN-TIME ! ! ! ! Barry
Jap spec battery terminals are smaller than the UK ones. They've given you a UK style battery. I changed mine a while back and got some really smart terminal clamps off Matt Harwood. Just chopped off the old ones and connected the new ones. Faye
My 98 J spec supras battery was playing up recently too, I got a replacement from Halfords and had no trouble with fitting it , the car has been running like a dream since. Steve W
Haven't looked at mine today (LAZY, FAT........) IF Barry's right and the/our J' has the tiny poles then I'll certainly be changing mine to 'normal' round poles. It will make it FAR easier (and a fair bit cheaper !) to replace the battery in future. The UK spec (005)is below and then follows the sizes along with the small/large Vauxhalls (063, 065) and the small/large Fords (085, 097) [and 017 = 'Transit'....lovely battery...miles too big ]
Steve W
005 = UK Soop 063 = Vaux' small 065 = Vaux' large 085 = Ford small 097 = Ford large
Darren
Even more confused now: The battery I have been sold is a 005 but dimensions are width 170 length 220 height 200 bit different to 170 x 200 x 225 mentioned in the above posts. Just to add more fun although im not in my Supra today, I know the Panasonic battery in my car is much narrower in width than this and sits in an original Toyota sleeve! What joy. Thanks for the help so far. Darren
Steve W
Darren, although it's 'right' and even 'best' to try to fit the original "spec" battery, it doesn't matter 2-hoots ! ! The ONLY things that matter are: the size (it must fit the battery 'tray' and not come anywhere near the bonnet/metal - the sleeve is cosmetic only, very few vehicles have them anyhow). ps. bigger is normally better but not always. The terminals (right size/shape to fit cables - although NO reason why you can't change cable ends...PROPERLY!). ps. a lot of Jap' cars have terminals 'other way round', pos=neg, neg=pos.we don't have THAT problem. The strength (that includes both CAPACITY and 'CRANKING' amps ie. instant/max power available and total amount in battery).ps. more is nearly ALWAYS better - you DON'T need a bigger alternator, it just takes longer to put it back in.....OR TAKE IT OUT ! ! SO, when I do mine, I will be trying to fit the biggest 'English'-type battery that goes in the tray....hopefully an 065/4 (or High Power) that should be better than the 'right' one. [bTW you can EASILY clamp the round cable ends to the flat post terminals with the bolt-hole ! but IF the ends are the smaller round-type I think you'll have to replace with the bigger 'English-y' THAT'S UNLESS YOU WANT TO FIT THE ORIGINAL TYPE/NUMBER... [NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT AT ALL, AS I SAID] [ My RS took an 085/3 but I put an 097/4 HD on it...... ie. longer AND more powerful AGAIN...2 steps-up if you like.... I NEVER had any trouble, even with 12" sub etc. etc.]
Darren
Thanks Steve. I did ask about a more powerful battery when I orderered mine but was told it was a rare size! I will change the connecting terminals and fit the 005. Cheers. Darren
Steve W
BUT, you can't fool me ! ! YOU just want a Double-"O" number.... [cue Bond Theme.................] (I DID look in Half-ies yesterday, they do a HB005 and a HBC005 which is their HD one I suppose, about £49.99 and £59.99 (I think) still don't list a Jap-type though - obviously RACIST ? ? )
