question about bpu

hi all, wondering, ive recently bought my second supra, this is another gz aerotop TT but this one is bpu. its got fcd, walbro pump, iridium plugs, hks boost gauge, veilside exhaust system with full double decat pipe.

my question is about bpu temps, ive not yet had the decats fitted as when i bought the car it had its cats put bk in for mot. it does have the restrictor ring fitted in the cat pipe from what the previous owner has told me. now at the moment im very happy with how the car goes but am unsure if its safe temp wise, ive not got any egt gauge fitted. The car boosts to 1bar on full boost 2nd turbo, with the decats fitted ive been told it will boost to 1.2bar. what id like to know is, is 1bar boost to much with the cats fitted. i am currently not giving the car full boost incase of temp issues, plus the cats in the car are brandnew from toyota at a price of £560 so dont want to damage them.

so what is making it boost to even 1bar anyway, i mean 1.76 is standard supra power. this supra has the cats in so i thought it should only boost to 11psi anyway, i mean even tho ive got fcd fitted, the standard fuel cut does not happen anyway until 1bar from what ive read. the only thing is veilside catback, would that alone rise boost to 1 bar at foot down 2nd turbo then. im confused now.

I didn't realise you'd posted this on the forum to, for others, here were my thoughts, for what they're worth :D

If it's reacting 1 bar with both cats in it's likely there is either some form of boost controller or one of the cats is replaced/gutted. TT's can reach 0.9 bar in cold weather with both cats in, the stock rear box is very restrictive so replacing that with a straight through rear setup will certainly raise boost.

Have a closer look at the 1st and 2nd cats and maybe stock some pics up on the forum.

One other thing is that your boost gauge may not be accurate - check the needle sits exactly at zero when the ignition on and engine not running. I've seen many that don't!

hi homer, yeah i did post here before i pm you last night, anyhow like i pm'd you earlier. This morning jumped in car, boost gauge perfect. To be honest i think i made a boobo:innocent: sorry, lol. Forgot how turbo cars respond when you can see the boost via gauge. you were right tho, i think the car is performing normal, its just for the first week or two of ownership ive not really been paying attention, where ive been putting my foot down on full boost i briefly been gandering across to the gauge and saw upwards of 1bar, now its just me, i just bought the car and so just being careful not to look at boost gauge for to long while picking up speed (got to keep the eyes on road). Well this morning i noticed that the car boosts to 0.5 on 1st turbo, then when i poke the loud peddle to get full boost the 2nd turbo is actually just spiking up to 0.9 - 1bar then drops to a consistant 0.8ish. Does this sound right? i am getting an extra 1 psi maybe, so that would be due to the veilside catback which is straight out from cats compared with the standard system which branches off into 2 pipes/boxes before getting to the backbox, so it seems thats where my little extra power is coming from, unless im wrong, lol. is full on bpu safe for the car then?

  • 8 months later...

My supra has all the bits, veilside exhaust including double decat(not currently fitted). Fuelpump, fcd, iridium plugs, boostgauge, also has hard pipe radiator kit, Just had a big service done also using silkolene titan race, so its fighting fit, its just i havint bothered putting it on bpu since buying the car bk last summer, so ive got a bpu supra for over a year and its standard :-) il want to make sure i phone sky and tell um before i put it on stage 1 tho, not worth the risk i dont think. How much more is it generally to put the car on bhp?
