b.weeks
Hi all, what's the best oil to use for this, and where can I source it from?
Gaz6002
I've moved this to the 'technical' section rather than the ICE one and changed your title so it's easier to search for in the future.

Jellybean
I have the same Diff (1.5 or 2 way) not sure but its the Carbon ats one! I run Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W 140 (Formerly SAF-XJ 75w-140)-- no chatting, no issues; 75W 140 is recommended by them a few times in the Carbonetic manual http://www.opieoils.co.uk/p-736-castrol-syntrax-limited-slip-75w-140-formerly-saf-xj-75w-140.aspx If you want a cheaper oil Motul PA 90 does the trick but I find it does not last near as long!! Its a mineral oil, but oil in the LSD runs its course alot quicker How are you finding the ridicolous frequency of lsd oil changes! Like running a race car, carbonetic told me If it is new, then the oil would need changing at 200 miles. After the first change the second and third is 1500~2000 miles. And after that it is 2000~2500 miles. When the carbon LSD is new, there will be carbon powder in the oil and and this can damage the LSD gears. b.weeks
Ta mate. Very useful! Previous work (services) was all done elsewhere. You know anywhere that sells GL-5 85W-90 online? How many litres does a diff take?

How many litres does a diff take? Tried everywhere , you can use Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W 140 (Formerly SAF-XJ 75w-140) or Motul PA 90;Castrol is what I use! Good stuff, lasts longer Diff takes just under 2 liters
b.weeks
Did some investigation work when I was back in the UK. Attached are some photos of the diff housing so you can see what size it is. We also replaced the oil. On draining the oil it was pretty thick, burnt and ionized so most likely contained filed bits of metal. We didn't have time to take the diff off and inspect, but we stuck a small camera into the housing and you can see the other attached pictures. Jellybean
Thats normal the thick black oil and the fillings, the fillings are from the carbon disks. It says in the manual dont worry if you see fillings plus the oil is very black and thick Its in here on page 1; http://www.carbonetic.net/tech/pdfs/Carbon_LSD.pdf It also states you change your oil every 3k Km or 1870 miles;its a pain in the ass. Mine is overdue an oil change but I dont have any noise as of yet (indicator of an oil change), all these oil changes can get very expensive , if I could afford it I would get a TRD LSD, I think you only change the oil once a year on average(hopefully somebody will correct me)
b.weeks
The knocking went away originally but has returned unfortunately. I think the 3 pictures actually show some of the components in there are knackered, need to open it up and have a full look.

I think the 3 pictures actually show some of the components in there are knackered, need to open it up and have a full look. When you say knocking, I presume you mean chatting within the LSD I tried 1 or 2 oils and forst change I used the incorrect oil, the LSD made one hell of a racket , knocking and banging but as soon as I put in the correct Oil (Castrol Syntrax Limited Slip 75W 140 or Motul PA 90) she went back to zero chatting , smooth and quiet ! I would still recommend the Castrol over the Motul PA90, I found the LSD smoother but the castrol is nearly double the price! I am sure the Motul Gear competiton would be just as smooth but it is crazy $$$
b.weeks
The knocking/clonking is on tight slow forward turns. Sounds like it's a welded diff. I have some Castrol, but didn't receive in time, so had to put some slightly thicker stuff in the the meantime.

You would only really notice the clonking at slow speed, the slower u go the worse it was; Scared the crap out of me, I taught the Diff was FUBAR
