Lude
UPDATE ON THIS: i removed the belt yesterday, and spun all of the pullys, none of them made a squeeq. i ran the engine withou the belt to see if it was the crank pully or engine noise, and NO squeek was made. put belt back on, squeek came back. it really sounds as if its the PAS area, and the car has been "using" fluid lately, not loads is going, cant see a leak, i know the sound of power steering whine (when its dead) the sound is a squeek not the whine. i did spin the PAS pulley, no sound was made, but you cant spin it by hand very fast, so quite possibly could it be this? Chris Wilson
It's common for worn pumps to squeal. Some particular makes of belts will start to squeal. I can rebuild your old pump so long as it's not totally goosed. New ones are about £350.
Lude
ok thanks chris, il let you know, if the squeek gets worse il either take u up on that or jsut replace it how much roughly to refirb? is that new bearings etc?
dude
No, I am pretty sure he's removed his air con pump, fitted a shorter belt, found the new belt run fouls the tensioner assemblie's damper bracket and damper that only manuals have, and he has removed the damper and the bracket(s) that it bolts to.? The tensioner arm itself, and the tensioner pulley remain? I have no AC and I run a shorter belt with the tensioner arm and damper !!! Just to confuse. I have had this before with a brand new belt, we ended up changing pulleys, bearings etc and even the tensioner, turned out it was a bad belt the grooves were not straight, ie it was a second and should never have been packaged, try a new belt
Lude
ok will do. mite be worth saying that i dont have a brace on the pump where i removed the AC, but it seems solid enough connected off the other braces on it,
Swampy442
Why are those dampers fitted to the aux pulley anyway?
dude
Why are those dampers fitted to the aux pulley anyway? To stop the belt jumping off when you change gear on a man car. My old silver auto used to chuck belts, fitted a 6 speed tensioner and never had a problem again.
Chris Wilson
When I fitted a triple plate clutch and the dog box to my Skyline it started to turn the PAS belt over, or throw it off altogether. Nearly had a nasty when it did this first time out at Anglesey. The belt was seeing a more sudden crank RPM change, and getting a "wave" in the long un-driven run. I decided to put an idler wheel on the back of the belt, and it immediately cured it. I have sold several now to others who drag race and have similar issues. The damper on engines Toyota put in the six speed manuals does a similar job, and takes up the kick from the belt in a controlled manner. Im going manual in my Aristo, maybe something to look into
Chris Wilson
They can, yes, you need the arm for the damper type unit, the damper itself, and the bottom bracket. I can get part numbers if you want new.
