al02uk
Hello, I work for an oil company and we are a customer of Esso. Anyway during the H&S meeting Esso wanted to focus on the use of mobile phones in terminals, and showed us this video. [video=youtube;nyYCu2K-NYQ]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyYCu2K-NYQ To be fair they can't say if the mobile was the cause or not, but have highlighted the fact that it is possible. Think i might look for a non terminal based job
Homer
I remember seeing that on a documentary some time ago, they put the blame on the driver not using an earth strap. This mobile phone vs petrol station thing has been long debunked.
al02uk
I'm not entirely sure why he is even looking in the top to be honest, the fuel comes out of the api's on the side. There is also an earth line on the back of the lorry which looks like it wasnt used. I'm afraid i'm a believer that phones can omit an electrostatic charge. It is unlikely but possible. Our lorry cab phones cost £1500 each (intrinsically safe) and are zone 1 compliant, but still are not allowed on any loading bay.

Swampy442
Phones dont make fuel takers blow up, bad practices do. Meh, Ive seen Italian bowser drivers refueling aircraft with a fag on the go and nothing blew up.

al02uk
It's possible for me to fly to the moon but it ain't gonna happen. True, but thats only because you cannot afford to or don't want to go. That statement is not even is the same context, no offence mate.
Paul
That ain't an explosion, Buncefield was an explosion and about 1/4 of a mile away from me !! The oil companies had alot to answer for on that one
al02uk
Thats true Paul, Guy's I was only posting the video because I didn't really believe much on the whole mobile phone/petrol station thing. But to have an Exxon Mobil spokesman and a Motorola spokesman telling you there is a possibility (however slight) then I kinda have to believe it. That was all. Paul
I never use my phone in a petrol station, any call can wait for a few minutes imo. While on the subject, what did all those people do before mobiles when they walk around supermarkets with them glued to their ear talking drivel? Jet fuel is not as flammable and petrol but i don't think i'd ever have big enough balls to have a fag on the go when filling a plane up. Rob
There has never been a single fire in a petrol station caused by a spark from a mobile phone....in the world. Ages ago I got an email from Shell confirming that they have never had any fires caused by mobiles in their entire history. Its along dull story but at the time I thought I had discovered the only example, only for it to be a red herring and be yet another static fire. mattysupra
It was proven that mobile phone can not cause this. It has been proven that wearing clothes containing Nylon cause thi due to static discharge. Also there is a easy fix to this issue. Its called a earth on the pump handle. pedrosixfour
He wanted to see how much fuel was in the first tank, it was dark , he used a lighter. He is one of those who believes it's the best way to check fuel tanks and batteries. The rest, as they say, is good footage.
