Septic
Hey guys. Sorry to bump this thread but I've recently started gym properly (again!) and was wondering if I could get some advice. I've read through this whole thread but I'm wondering, I want to lose a bit of a belly AND build some muscles- I know a lot of you guys are suggesting eating more but healthier- can I lose my belly by doing decent cardio and carry on eating the high protein stuff or should I maybe diet a bit, lose the belly and then start focusing on the muscles? (the latter seems to make less sense) Also, I'm drastically cutting my snacking habits (no more Doritos with Ancona Sauce ) and I'm wondering whether Houmous is okay to have. A lot of people are suggesting tuna with cottage cheese- do you guys have this as a snack and if so how?
Noz
cutting carbs is a good thing but dont cut it out altogether. you need carbs, not too many though. watching your diet, and increasing your protein intake it a good way to loose fat and build muscle. having the same habits and increasing protein intake will help muscle growth and leave the fat where it lives!! the best answer, is to do both
Septic
Ah cheers Noz. Yeah I'll do that. Cutting out the junk food is so hard- there are two packets of Haribo staring at me in the face p_p
Geo
You can do Both. First off, think of it as eating healthy not a diet there two different things IMO. Write down what you actually eat in a week, and from there you can adjust things. From here you can count the Cals/Fats/Protein/Carbs in meals. Then Adjust. Its all about Numbers.... Snacking go for Nuts, Natural Peanut Butter, Low fat Natty Yoghurt, fruit, these will fill in the gaps between meals. Cardio wise, all thats needed in 3 x 30mins per week, you can add in more/less depending on how your looking? post up what your eating just now? Well brace yourself: Breakfast- I usually skip this as I'm always rushing to work Lunch- I used to be really bad and have chicken burgers with cheese and spicy chips but recently stopped eating that too often and started having chicken mayo sandwiches on white bread or grilled cheese and spring onion sandwiches. Now that I've started gym, I'm having tuna with salad (with mayo and cheese- I know, its bad). Snacks wise I am quite bad at times, eating random sweets or Dortios but I'm consciously stopping that now. Dinner- whatever's at home really. Its usually a lot of meat- last night was grilled chicken but it usually is all manner of currys etc. Today I missed breakfast as usual and had to go out for lunch at an Indian restaurant as it was a colleagues birthday. I intend on going gym, maybe having a protein shake before I go- (working on biceps and chest today- did legs and abs yesterday).

Snacks wise I am quite bad at times, eating random sweets or Dortios but I'm consciously stopping that now. Dinner- whatever's at home really. Its usually a lot of meat- last night was grilled chicken but it usually is all manner of currys etc. Fish/chicken/turkey/extra lean mince, with mixed Veg or Veg of your chioce(a good portion) Some sort of fizzy pop(this is a treat) Today I missed breakfast as usual and had to go out for lunch at an Indian restaurant as it was a colleagues birthday. Your diet needs tons of work but you probably know that already and can now start to make a few modifications. For a kick off, you are missing the most important meal of the day in breakfast. Dont forget your body has been deprived of nutrients and water all night so getting up and not eating is essentially starving your body. Good breakfast imo is porridge with raisons, a protein shake, vitamin tablet and a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice. bit busy at work to answer the rest but sure Geo will chip in with the rest >
Graham1984
I use phd pharma whey its 80% protein and really low fat. Get a gold card from GNC and you can pick up a 2.27 kg tub for around £40. Like others have said above its more 70% diet 30% gym for bulking up well.

Septic
Okay that diet of yours Geo has come as a bit of a shock to the system Allright, from now on I'm not missing breakfast but that seems like so much to eat! 4 eggs?! I don't want to go for the complete muscles coming out muscles look man. I know you're huge Geo but I'm tiny at the moment with a big belly so I don't think that look would suit me. I'm the one on the right: I want decent biceps and triceps and a 6 pack- is this diet suitable? Mikeyb's diet seems more manageable "porridge with raisons, a protein shake, vitamin tablet and a glass of fresh squeezed orange juice." But if 4 eggs is what I need, I'll have 4 eggs! (plus bagel!) 200g chicken, 7 thai spices? Sorry I don't know what this is. Dinner I can do. But what about snacks? Is Humous okay to have? I'm starving now and want a snack. A lot of my mates say cottage cheese/tuna.
Geo
Just in gym mate. Bout to rattle shoulders and tri's. I'll get back to this thread later. I'll make a better diet for you. Thing is you should be starving in the morning. 8 hrs kip and fasting.
mikeyb10supra
Once you train hard mate you will be glad of the food in the morning. Sounds horrible, but you might need to force it down at the start if you cant manage it, but trust me you will need to food. On your training, please please dont fall into the 95% of guys training routienes hitting arms and abs with a bit of chest and nothing else. big compounds should form the basis of your training and maybe chuck a few isolation moves like bicep curls in if you have anything left in the tank at the end. By big compounds I mean, squats, deadlifts, bench press and gorilla/military press. Humous is ok, but has a lot of fat. Cashew nuts are the same but good for extra calories. Tuna and cottage cheese are fine if you can stomach that every day. I like snacking on natural yoghurt, nuts, fruit, and penut butter on ryvitas. Soya nuts are quite good too but well bland

So you're saying once I've done the usual routine and I have a bit of energy left, I should do bicep curls? Also, is it okay to do abs every day? This diet thing is crazy considering what I'm usually accustomed to but I'm determined and I will stick to it.

Without a proper diet, you may as well not bother going To be honest, its whatever works for you. For example I have been giving an all out strength workout a run for the past 5 weeks which looks like this Monday 3x5 squats 3x5 bench 1x5 deadlifts Wednesday 3x5 squats 3x5 pendlay rows 3x5 military press Friday 3x5 squats 3x5 bench 1x5 deadlifts I tend to mix it up every 8 weeeks and have a full week off every 8-10 weeks and just get as much food down my neck as I can
