Rookey
I thought the autos were only 4 gears... I was on the track and hit 110, then all of a sudden the auto box found a 5th gear??!!!! Surprised the hell out of me Are auto boxes 5 gears then? If so, how come it doesn't kick in below 110mph, it would be much better for motorway driving... Swampy442
The boxes are only 4 speed but the ECU does a bit of electronic jiggery pokery using the overdrive solenoid. You should be hitting 4th about
Kirk
There 4 gear only, they never made a 5 speed auto. I think you've miss counted
Chris Wilson
It would be the torque converter locking up. It locks up under certain mapped engine load, engine RPM, gearbox tailshaft speeds and fluid temperatures to increase economy and reduce emissions. Rookey
Nope, I didn't miscount... Chris, if the Torque Converter locks up, is that bad for the box then? I've rarely taken it over 100 as you don't really get to on the track, I'm just curious... And if it locks up, what then becomes the top-end in an N/a with the fake 5th gear "jiggery pokery" Dave
Swampy442
All torque convertors have a lock up speed, google it to see how one actually works
