What's the best desktop replacement laptop under £500

Recommended Posts

Looking to replace our 8 year old desktop with a laptop, I want to do this for space and also the portability of a laptop so I can use it for work.

We don't play games on the computer, but do like watching videos on you tube and dvd's, so graphics for this would be important and also I think a screen size no less than 17" would be important. Also I would use it for all other internet browsing, paperwork for my new business, like sending out letters, invoicing and also book keeping.

Any suggestions would be brilliant

A decent 17" will be difficult for under £500, but I would recommend this one -

2 year guarantee too

You don't need to worry about graphics, any decent laptop should cope well with what your after.

If you lose the 17" and go for a 15" John Lewis has a nice HP Intel i5, 4GB, 750GB laptop on special offer for £499....

Its due to expire in the next couple of days, hence its not on their website anymore.

All the laptops come with Office 2010 starter (Word and Excel) which is usally enough for most, otherwise expect to add around £60 or use open office.

As for antivirus download 'securuty essentials' from http://www.microsoft.com, Or search and download Avast antivirus.

Maybe 17" isn't neccesary. just looked at the john lewis hp one and it looks good. Would you say the dell laptops were any good? The inspiron 15r is 429 with a £30 discount.

Dell are ok, but after owning one I'd never go back.

I've always found HP to be the best PC's, the one I'm using now is a HP and after years of abuse its still going strong!

Just go for a 3-4GB memory, and in rough order - a Pentium, Athlon, Turion, i3, Phenom, or ideally i5 processor and you can't go wrong.

John Lewis offer the best cover, they even have 28 day return if you don't like the PC for any reason...Try getting that at PC World or Comet
