I cant tax my car now :(

Just wondering if anyone knows of any way i can tax my car in my current predicament.

I bought a car back in feb handed over the money etc. signed the V5 and left with the car. 5 Months down the line and I remember i need to tax the car, try to find the v5 or tax reminder. I cant find either and realise that I have never received either.

I called the DVLA who say it is still registered to the previous owner, they advised I can tax the car if I still have the green slip but I think I have thrown this away as i belived you could only use this for up to 30 days after you bought the car.

I have been back to the chaps house who says that he sent it off about 4 days ago with 2 first class stamps(yeah right!) but obviously the DVLA have not received this yet (nor will they ever i doubt).

So what can I do? do I have to just acccept the fact i have to pay £25 for a new log book and wait 6 weeks for it to come through?

Sorry for the ramble and poor spelling/punctuation.

Cheers,

Miles

I think that if you take all your docs, incurance/mot etc to the dvla office then you can get a tax disc straight away? I may be wrong - phone the DVLA though and find out!

Paul.

The problem is all I have are my insurance docs I havent got anything relating to me owning the car? I really dont want to have to use a bus for 6 weeks :(

You just need a V62. The V5 doesnt prove who owns the car, it just lets the DVLA know who is repsonsible for the tax on it etc.

Take the V62 form, mot and insurance with some proof of ID and I think they will sort it for you. If you send it off it will take a few weeks. Phone them?

If the car is still registered to the previous owner then it means they haven't bothered to do the legal requirement of sending in the V5 to the DVLA so they can issue you with a new one in your name.

Therefore any tax violations should be no worry of yours as any fines will go to the registered keeper of the vehicle.

Same with going through speed cameras, if you want you could go through them at any speed and let them flash away at you as the fines will also go to the registered keeper. ;)

It may jolt their obligation to send in the V5 to the DVLA.

(only joking, but in principal this is what the registered keeper will leave themselves open for, if you chose to do the above)

But failing to display a valid tax disc will be the fault of the driver not the registered keeper. You should ensure the car is road legal in all respects before you drive it. It is the drivers responsibility and the driver who would be prosecuted.

If stopped by the police that is correct.

you will have to wait for the log book mate unless you know anyone at the post office who would be willing to sort you out. can purchase the road tax online but as the vehicles still under the previous keepers name the tax disc will get sent to that address.

Cheers for the responses guys.

I've filled out the form now and just need to write the cheque and send it off.

Just annoyed that I have to pay for something just because the other guy was too lazy to send it off.

I'm off out now to go speeding and get some parking tickets :p
