oil pressure gauge dropping sharply

Recommended Posts

i have a GReddy oil pressure gauge.

always says the normall readings, exepct the last week

im not sure if its the gauge, sensor, or the engine (hope to god not!)

i can be driving normally, 30mph, and all of a sudden the gauge will drop to 0.5!

now when it does this, the gauge doesnt slowly drop in pressure, it sharpy drops, and stays there for about 6-7 seconds,

then sharpy goes back to the correct reading (doesnt slowly increase in pressure, it goes straight back)

anyone had this? isit the sensor? or am i looking at something more terminal like the oil pump or worse???

Nothing like your describing no, I wouldn't drive it until you check it with another gauge if I were you.

Mechanical pressure gauges are, in general, far more reliable than electronic ones with cheap senders. On a race car an oil pressure sender for a digital dash would be mounted away from the heat and vibration of the engine, on a piece of braided stainless -3 hose. It's probably the sender or wiring playing in your case. All the critical pressure gauges on my car are mechanical (boost, oil pressure, fuel pressure). Unless you buy very expensive Aerospace type pressure transducers (senders) that come from the likes of Honeywell, they give trouble, especially bolted direct to the engine. far cheaper to buy quality mechanical pressure gauges.

ah rite ok.

i think i will get a remote braided hose then, however the stock sensor is bolted direct to the engine block?

the gauge isnt cheap tho, its a Greddy gauge with sendor, and its the top Warning electronic version also,

il get the stock sensor plumbed in, just to verify nothing critical,

then check the sensor & wiring,
