Windows 7 Phones V The World.

My point mentioned way up on this thread still stands "that a dual core phone uses way more battery than a single core phone". My argument is about battery life on dual cores not about efficiency of core. A phone with a single core arm chip with a 1500mA battery lasts longer than with a dual core arm chip and the same battery.

That isn't an argument though, it's a lot of dross you have put on a page.

It's about as much use as saying a single core phone uses more power than a single core phone.

Think about it ;)

Again, well yes, maybe some mobile OS do not yet have effective use of multi-threaded systems but again - without applications using them it's a mute point. Dual-core in phones whilst useful to spread the load currently imho is a marketing tool, drawing in the same people who think megapixel count is everything on a camera, or screen size is everything on a display. Useful? Yes sometimes. Vital? No. Truly beneficial or exploited yet? No.

Great post Casey!

I only quoted the above as it hits the nail on the head for me.

You must cringe when the vendors start talking about cloud technology like it came out yesterday :D

Yeah this is right when you have applications written in native code like C or C++ or objective C++ (iOS). But if you have applications running on a framework like Java (for android) or .NET/Silverlight(for WP7). The framework is optimized to run on multiple cores and so the applications dont have to have the knowledge of cores. The apps can run and use the full potential of multiple cores.

Multiple chips with multiple cores each is a totally different story!

I know guys on here are very much divided on what phone OS suits them and what they prefer. This is obvious as everybody have a choice in the market and various contracts, features and price points to compete for. Most of you either prefer an iPhone or an Android or a blackberry as they are in the market for quite a while and are matured ecosystems. But I for all those people who are on the borderline or have not made up their minds or wanting to know more about WP7 please see the following video. It is a comparison between an year old Samsung Focus (single core) with the latest update of WP7 - Mango and the other one is the new iPhone 4S (dual core & iOS5).

So a comparison between two totally different phones? Whilst I admire you sticking to supporting a system that is a little late to the game..... They all have their flawes. Ios5 is just a copy of everything on the market, android is due a new release and w7 is just too late...

Mention Java to our programmers & they cringe, mention Java to our security team & they will stop talking to you :D

I agree the iO5 hasn't massively changed apart from SIRI.

Though remember without iOS, we wouldn't be here right now - Android OS when first released was just dreadful.

Think the android OS is a good copy of IOS; and also believe that the samsung galaxy feels cheap and tacky.

I certainly like my IPAD, its great for what I use it for.

imi

what do you think is similar with them? They couldn't be more opposite imo.

The settings for example are all in the one place in is with no way to easily change them without leaving the app. android uses customizable pages which you can add live apps to or icons or virtually anything you wish. Ios only allows icons as far as I know.

When it comes to file sharing you are restricted to apple products, you can't even easily share files between apps in Ios. android has localized shared space as should be expected nowadays.

I can see absolutely no similarity in the os or how they operate on any level.

The only cheap part on the sg is the battery cover. very thin and flimsy. Other than that its all good. the desire was a little cheap though in comparison to other phones at the time.

Walter Isaacson biography on Steve Jobs will go on sale from Monday, but Associated Press got a copy of it. They posted some excerpts from the book which says that Steve Jobs felt that Android is a stolen product and he is willing to wage a war on it.

“I will spend my last dying breath if I need to, and I will spend every penny of Apple’s $40 billion in the bank, to right this wrong. I’m going to destroy Android, because it’s a stolen product. I’m willing to go thermonuclear war on this.”

“I don’t want your money. If you offer me $5 billion, I won’t want it. I’ve got plenty of money. I want you to stop using our ideas in Android, that’s all I want.”

Hehe, you have to laugh at a statement like that. Just look at the "New" notifications bar in iOS5.... wonder where they got that idea from :D

It's a bit like Vauxhall trying to sue Toyota for also making vehicles that have 4 wheels. All smart phones will share some similarities, that's a given.

A little light reading giving some interesting views, not definitive, but interesting how much incoming MS are probably making from Android OEMs

http://www.infoworld.com/t/android/microsoft-makes-more-android-windows-smartphones-707

Over the weekend, Horace Dediu on the Asymco blog put some numbers together and estimated that Microsoft has made five times more income from Android than from Windows Phone.

And

http://arstechnica.com/microsoft/news/2011/10/microsoft-collects-license-fees-on-50-of-android-devices-tells-google-to-wake-up.ars

According to charts in the blog post, 55 percent of Android devices by worldwide revenue are subject to patent license agreements between Microsoft and original design manufacturers, such as Compal. Moreover, 53 percent of Android smartphones by unit share in the United States are subject to patent license agreements between Microsoft and original equipment manufacturers, such as Samsung and HTC.

Ouch! Both on hit for Android and MS.

Anybody interested in a phone that has a fresh new design to it ... Nokia Lumia 800. Very impressive job by Nokia (with Nokia Drive & Nokia Music) ... Job well done!

Reason why Nokia needs to move on to the Windows Symbian is because they know their current O/S is getting dated... Nokia used to rule pre-smartphone era but now they really need to catch up.
