I currently do not have wifi on my work computer, they are including this later in the year.

For the time being, I would like to connect it using the usb link. Kies air is a wifi app, any usb connection apps?

Thanks for pointing this app out, i will be using it at home for sure.

Yes, Kies does that too. You just need to download it from the Samsung website. It may even be on the stock memory or memory card on the phone, I think that's where I got the first copy from.

Ive installed the PC software. For some reason, when I go to settings >> wireless and network >>

I can not find kies mode, nor can I figure out how to change the mode to allow to connect it. can't find it in the menu's anywhere :(

Kies via Wifi - is only setting I can use

That's strange, when I plug mine into the USB my phone comes up and asks me if I want to connect to USB mode?

Try hitting menu, settings, wireless and network, USB settings then turning on USB storage.

It shouldn't be that but it might be.

Did you reboot the PC after installing it? Unlikely that's the issue but it might be.

I just tried it with my laptop, I haven't installed Kies but I'm downloading it now to try it out for you.

When I plug my phone into the USB without any settings changed it asks me if I want to turn off my bluetooth in order to enable USB mode. I selected yes and it says it's connected in MTP mode. Fromt here my laptop recognises it as the i9100 and opens up the device showing 2 drives inside it (One being the memory stick the other being the internal memory). This is the state it must be in for Kies to access it from what I remember.

The other option you have is USB mode, this is where you enable USB mode via the previous instructions I gave you. This will connect the phone to the PC showing as 2 seperate drives. It also works a little faster for file transfers in this mode.

Will download Kies and see what the deal is there as I haven't used the wired version for ages.

Ok strange. Ive used USB mode countless times for file transfer, going to try it out on my laptop at home see if downloading it again on a different set up works any better. Maybe my work computer is not recognizing the phone like it should. I'll give it ago on my windows 7. Thanks Scott.

Is your works computer restricted at all? In my work the security stops us from installing new drivers so Kies wouldn't work on it. The normal USB mode of the phone (the one that kicks in without you doing anything) uses a completely separate driver from the one that it uses when using the manual USB mode. Windows automatically as the USB Storage Volume driver inbuilt since something like windows 2000 so any OS after that will have the driver for that side of things built in. That would explain why one USB mode works while the other doesn't at least.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just read through the tips tricks again. Having truble with a Macbook recognizing the phone  Anyway post 162 fixed it all up. Cheers again Scott, I'd forgotten that tip.

Only one thing to report, cannot seem to set up a secure wifi with the Mac. I sometimes like to use the computers' wifi to piggy back on when using Skype or data heavy operations. Of course I don't want anyone else using the network and using my dongle data up so it became an issue to try solve.

This is when I'm abroad of course and using phone data is prohibitively expensive.

Any tips from the Mac boys would be nice. :)

By the way I haven't converted to Mac as such. Both my windows items crashed and burned at about the same time, one permanently :(, and I found myself in the position of being able to pick up the latest Macbook for 600 quid cheaper than rrp. :D

I do however love the build quality and am suitably impressed with the rest of it. :taped:

Got fed up of waiting for ICS, so have rooted it today. Will let you know how it feels once i am out the other side. Am very impressed, and i mean VERY, its reinstalling all my applications again for me, how cool is that!

I went over to ICS late last week. Very happy with it so far. It looks a little bit nicer but it's not overly different, very subtle changes for the better. It's noticeably faster, no idea how they have managed that as I thought it was lightening quick as it was.

They have changed the main settings menu from icons to a list, that's a strange one for me but it works just fine. The new task manager is miles better, as is the fact that you can swipe to dismiss notifications etc.

All in all a VERY good update IMO. I'm guessing most of the changes are behind the scenes as other than a bit of re-arranging and re-designing on the graphics front it's not that much of a change style wise. Some nice toys though, the facial recognition thing is quite quirky.

Is it officially out? I read it is supposed to be sometime this week?

Does it address the battery issue by any chance?

It officially came out yesterday but it will probably take a while before the operators issue the upgrade, as they like to muddle their way through them and fudge them here and there.

I've never had any issues with the battery?

Thanks Scott, I'll have to look into doing the update.

Battery is still poop! Hardly use it much & it lasts about 1 day. I tried all the battery cycles you recommended & some I read on forums but it is still no good.

I'd maybe think about sending it back mate. I get a whole weekend out of mine with minimal use. I get a day out of it using it constantly for music, games, texting etc without any bother. The only time I don't get the whole day out of it is when I use it for tethering. I think I get about 6 hours out of it then, that's to be expected though.

I am tempted to Scott, I know the chap at the store & when I spoke to him previously he mentioned he had a few customers complain of the same, though after a couple of months they seemed to be fine. I think I have had the device now about 4 months and it is still pretty bad in terms of how much it is used. Like you said if I was using it to tethering or run a host of applications then I can see it hitting hard on the battery but it is mainly WhatsApp, quick phone calls and a bit of forum browsing.

Na that's definitely not right mate, should blitz a day with no issues after that use.
