So then Scott have you used Google Sky maps on SG2 in Night mode - it's really cool :D

Can't say I have, I'll give that a go tonight.

Is this the thing I've seen where you can point the phone at the sky? I think I saw an advert or something showing something like that.... or something.

Yep - it shows you quite literally what you are looking at. It also has a layers function so you can build up the display using categories - stars, planets, galaxies etc...You can use a nice search function too, then a massive arrow shows you where to point the thing.

Star Walk app. That's what it's called on the iPhone. It really is excellent. You can watch satellites going over too. :)

(When I have signal, that is!)

Gave this thing a go last night. It's really cool actually. I didn't get a chance to view the different layers etc but I liked the "Red Alert" submarine style "night mode" :D

I was quite taken aback by the fact that I seem to have an imprint of the galaxy on my ceiling. Not quite sure how that came about.

I thought I would have to be outside for it to work :D

Right.... where were we...

I've just rememberd some other good stuff and some other not so good stuff. I've also found some new good stuff thanks to Rob and co.

The Good:

Wifi Hotspot - Not sure if all providers will allow this to be enabled but T-Mobile certainly have for me. This enables you to make your phone a Wifi Hotspot. This means you can connect your Laptop, iPad, PS3, or anything with wireless, to the phone and use its internet. I use this all the time and it was one of the very few things I used the rooted nature of my Desire for (Wifi Tether). With previous phones I think most have had to root, jailbreak, or whatever the going term is, and install 3rd party apps. The SII has it built in.

Google Maps - They really do keep getting better and better. The navigation has always been fantastic (really fantastic, I have a tomtom and it's not as good) but little additions here and there to the google apps are just improving the experience constantly. One such addition is the Google Sky Maps app. This allows you to view the stars from your very own phone. it uses all the sensors on the phone to allow you to point the phone skywards and see what is all around you. There is also a nightmode which looks cool in a "Red Alert" way.

Wifi Direct - Allows you to make full on Adhoc connections to other adhoc devices. Ideal for file sharing. Basically it works like bluetooth only MUCH faster.

Volume - This handset is very loud IMO. The notifications just seem that little bit louder than other phones I have had in recent years. Very handy.

Heptic Feedback - Fully adjustable thankfully. The intensity was a little too much on the Desire. It can now be adjusted to suit your needs.

Voice Talk - Gimmicky IMO but quite fun. You can talk to your phone and tell it to do stuff. Not really my cup of tea but good for a play.

The Bad:

The battery cover - It's very thin and flimsy looking. Granted I've had it on and off a few times with no dramas but it honestly doesn't full you full of confidence. On the other hand it keeps the weight down and should be cheap to replace. I just feel that a couple of grams to the weight wouldn't have made an impact but it would have seriously helped give more confidence.

Death Grip - There are some slight issues with the phones signal in low areas. Similar to that of the iPhone4. Granted the issues aren't anywhere near as bad but they are there. If I am in a low signal area I can drop my signal by cupping the bottom of the phone. I didn't actually notice this till I read it but now that I know about it I can see it happening. It isn't an issue when you are in a decent signal area.

Apps - Some apps require updating and no longer work. One of the apps I was looking forward to trying was the video wallpaper app. I installed it but there was no icon and no options available. I've noticed another few that don't work but nothing that I wasn't just looking to mess around with (unless otherwise mentioned).

Again it's only really little niggles about this phone that are annoying. Most of them can be sorted out with software updates. The only thing that REALLY bothers me is the whole MMS thing. I don't like the fact that you need to physically turn the data on and off to send and recieve MMS messages. It should be automatic.

OK. NOW HEAR THIS!

I think what I'm going to do is cut out a lot of the non-specific Samsung Galaxy S2 stuff (it's awesome btw), but I think talking about other platforms does have a place, so I'll start a new thread for it. Let battle commence elsewhere.

I have been objective in all my posts by explaining every point I made with an example scenario. None of the guys who made counter arguments gave the same response neither answered my questions about end user usage scenarios. If you disagree then please read the later section in my post #30.

Sorry Scott, steering this thread in this direction is not at all my intention. One argument led to another and another n ended up like this. I am just pointing out a paradigm shift coming to all the mobile OSes. The front runners for this paradigm being WP7 & iOS5. This is the a similar multitouch/app centric ecosystem based paradigm shift that came about with the first iPhone that made it such a big success.

Do you mean the hub part?

Yeah the Galaxy SII has those features too. It has "Social Hub" where you can connect all the different people (Facebook, Twitter, Phonebook, MSN, Email, etc, etc, etc), "Game Hub", "Music Hub" and "Readers Hub".

You aren't being objective though bud. You are being opinionated. There is a massive difference between what you are putting forward as your argument and what this thread is all about. I don't need to give examples to my argument, they are there for all to see. Android is far more popular than WP7, they aren't even in the same planet nevermind the same league. I told you that I have tried both phones, have you even seen a Galaxy SII? It would seem to me that you haven't as you didn't know about the hubs and how the interact with the rest of the phone. If that IS the case, then your opinion isn't objective. It's one sided, biased and opinionated.

The reviews for the Android phones are better than the WP7 ones, the popularity is far higher, the future looks far better and the market opportunities are far higher. Those are my arguments, they have been since the beginning. Everything you have put forward since has dodged those points and been about something that noone cares about....... if they did the sales figures would be painting a different story.

If your counter is based on the futre products that M$ are looking to bring out then what on earth were you doing with your first comment in this thread? I know the answer to that, so does everyone else who is fed up with the rubbish you spout on here.

I'll have to pm you at some point re; this bit of kit.

It's my first Android and quite frankly I really like it, but I'm probably only aware of a fraction of what they can do.

My last phone (Samsung slide type) did a great job of...err making calls & texting, but that was pretty much it.

It's hard work being a bit thick you know.

No worries, it is limitless though lol. I only do what I do, but I'm sure we will have common ground in most areas :D

BTW, happy to have any discussions about it here. Might be useful information for others? Up to yourself though :)

  • 4 weeks later...

I personally find the battery fine but I don't do lots of downloads or owt - but have loads of automatic updates etc.

I find the predictive text a bit troublesome. Am I being retarded or is there a way of changing this? For example I wrote 'waffle' earlier on today and now it wants to add waffle after every word I type!

Aside from that I love it. So glad I got it.

I still have the original Galaxy S, does the S2 offer much of an upgrade to be worthwhile? I use the wireless hotspot thing and it has saved me forking out for one of those USB dongles for my netbook. I love the screen and vid playback and the camera is brilliant and swype is very clever.

Only things I would love to see is some physical buttons for the emulators for games, I can live with touch screen buttons but some sort of physical Dpad would be nice. I can't understand the obsession with making a phone as thin as possible, I would much rather my S was twice as thick with a large battery, wouldnt be as awkward to hold for calls either. I'll probably let my contract go back to a PAYG setup after it expires, I don't use mobile networks enough to justify the price a month.

Have been looking into this and i cant get over the size of it, ok, so i can use it as a drinks tray but really.

Do you not find it a bit big?

Does it sit ok in your pocketsies?

Worried about scratching that beautiful screen as well.

Before I bought mine I had the smaller Samsung G600 (slide) and I really liked its dimensions etc...Howeever the S2 sits in my back pocket just fine and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. It is very light as well as thin don't forget.

And screen wise, it has this Gorilla glass which is supposed to be scratch resistant, but I've slapped on a screen protector from ebay, only a couple of quid etc for a pack.

I've just got a Desire S and love it, seems to have most of the things you're talking about on the GS2. I know someone with a Galaxy S that they're getting a bit annoyed with, and my brother has the Desire and my Desire S is quite a lot faster and has a few nice additions like the wifi hub.

It is on the large side, but the phone is all screen so it's a trade off really. Smaller phone = smaller screen. However, it's so light and so thin that I literally don't notice it in my pocket. I find myself checking my pockets more often as I think I have left it somewhere. I had the HTC Desire before this phone and it was much more apparent in your pocket.

The square edges of the Galaxy doesn't do it any favours, it makes it feel a little bigger in the hands than it would if it had rounded edges. As I said though, it's a tradeoff and one that I am happy to make :)

As for the screen, it's gorilla glass (as LBM said). Check out youtube for some vids ;)

How you finding the battery life scott ? If I surf the fourm or ebay its tends, to eat the battery very quickly,

/QUOTE]

It's better than my desire was but it's a typical smartphone where batterylife is concerned. It lasts much longer than the desire HD does and a little longer than my desire did. I get a full days play out of it, as long as I don't turn on tethering. When i came back my holidays I literally lounged about the house/garden for a week and I think I charged it once over that time. It lasts for ages if you don't play with all the gadgetry.

I've not even looked at the predictive text, I just turned it on and left it too it. Coming from the Desire it took a bit of getting used to, the way it selects words etc is different. It does feel a little clumsy at times but I haven't had it doing anything like that with me. I'll try typing in waffle later and see what happens :D

It is a massive step up in terms of technology. The screen is better, the processor is much better and the memory etc is better. The OS has some nice upgrades too. Not sure if it would be a huge upgrade for you personally but it's certainly a huge upgrade as far as phone comparison goes. I didn't really rate the Galaxy S to be honest.

Desire S isn't quite in the same league but it is a cracking phone. I thought about getting one of those before I read about the sensation (same league). In all honesty if it wasn't for T-Mobile dragging their heels I would have one of those over the S2 but I'm plesantly surprised that the change wasn't as much hassle as I was expecting (although I do miss some of the Sense touches).

Hey Scott, seeing as you seem to be much better with the phone than me, got a question for ya bud. Every time I press the 'Phone' button it automatically takes me into the 'Logs' section. I want it to stay on the 'Contacts'. Any idea if that's possible?

Basically, say i've text 100 people, called 20 etc, go the the home screen then pressed the 'Phone' button it'll go straight into 'Logs' and list off everything (which I really don't wanna see!) even if I left it previously on 'Contacts'.

Oh and Charlotte, waffle works for me too, I get Waffle, Baffle, Raffle on my predictive text! To which i've noticed holding the phone in landscape texting with predictive text covers the screen so you can't see what your writing!

Will you actually sit down with it in your back pocket? I'm to scared to!!!

Any of you guys/girls got the genuine GS2 vented cover? Just ordered one to replace the rubbery one I have on there. Hopefully it's a little thinner as it feels to wide with the cheap rubber cover!

No. It's no bother. If I'm using it, it's in my hand or on a desk or in a car holder.

When walking it's in my back pocket and if I sit down, I put it in my front pocket :)

Re: the cover, I recently replaced my cheap floppy rubbery one for a slimline cover (not Samsung OEM one) and I like it. An Ebay job IIRC approx £5.00

Ah good, I managed to find a genuine vented cover thing (suppose to be genuine anyway!) on ebay for 8.99 delivered! Hopefully it's a good copy if it's not real!

The 'Phone' button will always take you into either 'Logs' or 'Dialer'. I think it basically puts you into whichever one you were on last. If you hit 'Phone', then select the 'Dialer' tab, then hit exit and then hit the 'Phone' button again, it should take you into the 'Dialer'.

The 'Contacts' button is the one that will take you straight into the 'Contacts' tab ;)

You can swap them round if you would rather have it that way, it just means that you will need to hit the tab on the left should you want to dial a number :)
